    • There is provided a tin lid for use with cans of oblong shape in Hansa format, which includes in its lid image section a tear-open portion defined by a self-contained recessed line capable of being broken up at one end of the lid by means of a pull-open ring attached to this end. At the other end, said recessed line includes a straight recessed line portion which extends in chordal-type fashion with respect to the core wall shaped like an arc of a circle and which is positioned perpendicular and symmetrically to the longitudinal lid center line and is further connected with the other recessed line components through an also chordal-type or polygonal recessed line connecting portion. This tear-open portion area defined by the polygonal arrangement of the recessed line, above all, is stiffened by a group of like and completely uniformly distributed beads, which are further associated with the chordal-type recessed line portion in predetermined manner, to so ensure the tear-open portion's final separation from the remaining lid section virtually without any remarkable capacity of the lid image section to undergo spring movement itself.

    • A blow molded, thin walled plastic container for filling with a liquid whose temperature is elevated above ambient. The container includes a first portion of a first diameter, a second portion of a second diameter, and reduced diameter region between the first and second portions. The reduced diameter portion extends circumferentially around the container and a plurality of ribs which are located to extend between the first and second portions. The ribs form reinforcing members in the reduced diameter portion and increase the top load capabilities of the container. The first and second portions can both be formed in the shoulder portion of the container or one in the shoulder portion and one in the sidewall of the container.

    • There are described solvent-free, low monomer or monomer-free polymerizable melt compositions suitable for the corrosion and abrasion resistant coatings of substrates and formed bodies of metal, plastic, cellulose materials and/or inorganic materials and/or the creation of a protective film with barrier properties and methods of making them. The melt compositions are particularly useful especially for use in packaging, and comprise: (a) at least one polymerizable, hydroxyl-containing polymer having an average molecular weight (Mw) of between 1,000 and 500,000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of .gtoreq.+20.degree. C., and/or (b) at least one polymerizable, linear unbranched and/or branched polyester and/or its copolymer having an average molecular weight (Mw) of between 800 and 50,000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of .gtoreq.-50.degree. C., and/or (c) a polymerizable oligomer carrying an ethylenically unsaturated group, of the following group consisting of acrylic, methacrylic, ether, ester, urethane, amide, imide, epoxide, siloxane, phenol, novolak and/or mercapto compounds having an average molecular weight (Mw) of between 400 and 10,000, and (d) if required, conventional additives. Further described are processes for preparing these melt compositions and methods of further processing these melt compositions and finishing planar substrates and/or shaped bodies with these melt compositions. Moreover, the present invention relates to a process for polymerization or curing of the melt composition.

    • At least one complete surface of at least one metallic part of a can is given a uniform coating of corrosion-preventing lacquer and this part is subsequently worked such that the metal of the part is exposed at regions at least immediately adjacent the coated surface. Dots of lacquer are sprayed by the ink-jet method substantially only on the exposed regions of the part after working thereof and so that the dots together form a continuous layer covering the exposed regions. According to the viscosity of the lacquer the surface coating can be achieved by partially overlapping adjacent dots of the applied lacquer or without overlapping by the running together of the adjacent dots of the liquid, with no excess material having to be applied to and subsequently removed from the regions to be coated.
