    • An airdisk (80) performs a TDMA/FDMA (Time Division Multiple Access/Frequency Division Multiple Access) wireless broadcast, divided into periodically-repeated time-slotted data items, analogous to sectors on a rotating disk, over multiple broadcast frequencies, analogous to tracks on a disk. The data items (1-14) on the airdisk may be sorted according to user interest, user profile, or from polling user preferences as by the monitoring of an uplink for user requests. The monitoring of the uplink can be performed in a time less than the rotation period of the airdisk. Users may be precluded from requesting data already on the airdisk for a prescribed time period. The sorting of the data items may be according to rank of popularity, iteratively calculated by an objective function which exchanges ranked weighted data items on the airdisk to obtain the value of candidate sort orders which optimize the objective function.

    • A method and system are provided for managing memory to reassemble data packets received from different virtual channels in an ATM network. The method and system recognizes that both reliable and best effort traffic must be supported by a network interface. The system makes use of a virtual First-In-First-Out (FIFO) concept that partitions random access memory (RAM) space into multiple FIFO queues. The virtual FIFOs can have different sizes, and can be allocated to connections depending on quality of service requirements. A dedicated embedded controller (721) to provide flexibility is used in the system, as well as Content Addressable Memory (CAM) devices (723, 724) and external logic. The method and system can also be applied at ATM transmitters in the implementation of congestion control algorithms.

    • A Nonpublished Number Messaging (NPNM) (100) system allows a caller (102) to leave a message for a party having a nonpublished telephone number. When a caller calls directory assistance to request a telephone number, an operator service system (OSS) switch (106) routes the call to a directory assistance operator (108). The operator enters the requested listing into an operator console (108) and a search is made in an OSS database (DB) (110). When it is determined that the requested telephone number is nonpublished, the OSS switch (106) routes the call to an audio response unit (ARU) (112), which plays a recorded message, and then routes the call to a voice mail service (VMS) (114) provider. The VMS Provider records a message left by the caller and then delivers it to the appropriate party.
