    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable speed control device for a transmission having a kick-down mode set in accordance with the manipulated variable of acceleration by a driver, allowing the setting of the kick-down mode at a timing intended by the driver even in a travelling status where a road surface gradient is changed. SOLUTION: The variable speed control device comprises gradient detecting means for detecting a road surface gradient Ri, acceleration manipulated variable detecting means for detecting the acceleration manipulated variable Ao, vehicle speed detecting means for detecting a vehicle speed V, and control means for setting a determining acceleration manipulated variable DAo as the acceleration manipulated variable Ao required for setting the kick-down mode. During travel on an uphill/downhill road, the road surface gradient Ri and the vehicle speed V are used as parameters for changing the determining acceleration manipulated variable DAo. In consideration of the steady-state travel acceleration manipulated variable Ao depending on the road surface gradient Ri, the determining acceleration manipulated variable DAo can be set and the kick-down mode can be set at the timing intended by the driver similar to that during travel on a flat road.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure good gear shift quality in compliance with an engine load during upshifting in an upshift controller for an automatic transmission by which a first fastening element is released while a second fastening element is fastened and a gear position after an upshift is accomplished. SOLUTION: An upshift controller for an automatic transmission is provided with an accumulator back pressure control valve (f) which uses an engine load equivalent pressure and an input pressure of a second fastening element (b) as action signal pressures and switches a back pressure of an accumulator (e) from a supply side to a drain side when a differential pressure between the engine load equivalent pressure and the input pressure of the second fastening element (b) reaches a set differential pressure, a timing valve (h) which applies the input pressure of the second fastening element (b) to the accumulator back pressure control valve (f) or carries out switching to the drain side, and accumulator back pressure control means (i) outputting an instruction, by which the timing valve (h) is switched to the drain side temporarily for a timer shorter than a piston stroke equivalent time of the second fastening element (b) from a start of the upshifting and switched to the input pressure communication side of the second element (b), to a valve control actuator (g) when an upshift is determined because of power-off.
