    • A light beam emitted from a laser light source is made incident upon a video disc by means of an objective lens and a light flux reflected by the disc is made incident upon a light detector arranged in a far field of an information track of the disc. The light detector includes four light receiving regions divided in a track direction and a direction perpendicular to the track direction. A first sum of output signals from diagonally aligned two light receiving regions and a second sum of the remaining two light receiving regions are derived and then a sum signal and a difference signal of the first and second sums are formed. The difference signals are sampled by sampling pulses generated at positive going and/or negative going zero cross points of the sum signal to generate sampled values. A tracking error signal is obtained from sampled values.

    • In a method and apparatus for detecting an information signal and a focussing error signal of an objective lens with respect to a video disc on which main and sub beams emitted from a laser light source are to be focussed as light spots by the objective lens, the main and sub beams reflected by the video disc are made incident as parallel light fluxes upon a detection prism surface which is set substantially at a critical angle with respect to the main beam, but at an angle smaller or larger than the critical angle with respect to the sub beam, and two light fluxes of the reflected main beam which situate on respective sides of a boundary plane including the central light ray and perpendicular to a plane of incidence, and are reflected by the reflection surface are separately received by two light receiving regions which are divided along a boundary plane including the main beam reflected by the reflection surface and perpendicular to the plane of incidence. The focussing error signal is derived as a difference between output signals from the two light receiving regions and the information signal is derived as a sum of the output signals from the two light receiving regions. The sub beam transmitted through and refracted by the reflection surface is received by a light detector and a tracking error signal is derived by detecting a variation in a light amount of the sub beam impinging upon the light detector.

    • An optical pickup unit has a light emitting device which emits laser light, and a monitor unit formed of a transparent resin, which integrally forms a photoreceptor device which receives the laser light and a circuit device connected to the photoreceptor device. A part of the transparent resin of the monitor unit is disposed in a part of an optical path of the laser light, the transparent resin causes part of the laser light to be reflected or refracted for supply to the photoreceptor device, the photoreceptor device outputs a detection signal corresponding to the part of the laser light, and upon receipt of the detection signal from the photoreceptor device, the circuit device performs a signal process and produces an output.

    • In a video and/or audio disc information reproducing apparatus in which the video and/or audio information carried on a video and/or audio disc is picked up with a beam of light incident on the disc to trace the record track on the disc, an error detecting system comprising optical means to emit a beam of light for tracing the record track and producing a signal-carrying beam of light carrying signals picked up from the record track, beam-splitting means to split the signal-carrying beam into two component beams, light-sensitive transducer means responsive to the component beams and having at least four discrete light-sensitive surfaces separate from one another across a first junction line parallel with a line tangent to the record track and a second junction line parallel with a line perpendicular to the record track, the transducer means being operative to produce a first error signal representative of the difference between the intensities of light incident on the light-sensitive surfaces separate from each other across the first junction line and a second error representative of the difference between the intensities of the light respectively incident on the light-sensitive surfaces separate across the second junction line.
