Date Feb. 18, 1982.The projectile (1) comprises a head (3) and a tubular tail section (4) carrying fins (5). A piston (6) is fitted inside the tail section so as to form, with the walls of the latter, a closed combustion chamber containing a propellent charge (7). The launching means comprise a cylindrical launching rod (2) which is mounted on a support (12). The rod (2) is hollow and contains a percussion member comprising a percussion pin (14) fast with a percussion rod (13). For launching the projectile, the latter is positioned on the launching rod (2) so that the end of this rod is engaged in the opening of the tubular tail section (4). The free end of the tail section is then centered in relation to the launching rod (2). When the ends of the launching rod (2) and of the piston (6) then come into contact, a centering is likewise produced at this level, because of the cooperation between the guiding surfaces (2') and (6'). This makes possible a perfect centering of the detonator (8) with respect to the percussion pin (14) and enables the piston (6) to be maintained in a coaxial position with respect to the launching rod (2) throughout the propulsion phase.

    • 1,222,439. Percussion firing mechanism. F. A. DONNER. 19 April, 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 18707/68. Heading F3C. A percussion device for a mortar comprises a projectile receiving chamber I 1 , a striker rod 10 and striking mechanism, the rod being slidable between a firing position and a rest position and having one end movable within a passage (formed in the cap 9) to project therefrom into the chamber in the firing position, and carries a sealing valve 11 for co-operation with a seat 12 formed round the axis of the said passage and facing the chamber, the rod having return means 14 co-operating therewith to urge the valve against the seat, the said one end of the rod being a loose fit within the passage and thereby substantially free from sliding friction along its sides during its sliding movement. As shown, the striking mechanism comprises a hammer 22 actuable by a spring, not shown, and returned by spring 15. In another embodiment (Figs. 2-4, not shown) the hammer is provided with a positive drive by means of an eccentric pin (17), the hammer 22 being loosely coupled to the striker rod 10 which has a rear tip (18) disposed between faces (20, 21) of the hammer.

    • A regenerative liquid propellant gun having structure which reacts to combustion pressure to dispense and regulate the flow of liquid propellant from an included reservoir as one parameter for obtaining a predetermined pressure/time curve of gun chamber pressure. A first coaxial pumping piston is a differential area pressure piston operating between the combustion chamber and the primary propellant reservoir. A second coaxial piston in a bore in the first piston opens and closes injection ducts running through the pumping piston from the primary reservoir to the bore to interdict flow of propellant to the combustion chamber as a result of relative motion of the two pistons as one or both move responsive to propellant combustion pressure. The second piston may also be a differential area piston operating between the combustion chamber and a second reservoir which may also dispense propellant to the combustion chamber or may be a part of a separate hydraulic system dedicated to hydraulic control of the second piston. The disclosure includes several alternative arrangements for control of the relative movement between the pistons.
