    • 1341271 Coke ovens SIMON-CARVES Ltd 19 April 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 23705/71 Heading F4B In a rich gas fired twin flued regenerative coke oven, pipes 33 and 34 respectively feed low and high level burners in one group of heating flues, and pipes 35 and 36 respectively feed low and high level burners in the alternate group of heating flues. In operation, gas is fed through open cocks 28 via pipes 33 and 34 to the burners of the first flue group, whilst cocks 29 in the pipes 35. and 36 are closed to shut off gas flow to the alternate flue group. Pressurized decarbonizing air can be admitted to the pipes 35 and 36 at this time from line 37 through fourway cock 39. In a first position A of the cock 39 air is admitted only to pipe 36 to decarbonize it and its associated burners,in a second position B air is admitted only to pipe 35 for a like purpose, and in a third position C a throttled supply of venting air is admitted to both pipes to prevent flue gases from the " off" heating flues flowing back down them. Alternatively, in this third position the pipes 35 and 36 could be vented to atmosphere via a slot in the housing of the cock 39. A similar four way cock 38 prevents decarbonizing air passing to pipes 33 and 34 whilst gas is passing through them. On reversal, i.e. positions D, E and F, gas is fed through the pipes 35 and 36 and decarbonizing air via cock 38 to the pipes 33 and 34. The period during which decarbonizing air is fed to any given pipe is restricted to the minimum necessary to completely decarbonize that pipe and the associated burners. This may be longer for the high level burners than the low level burners.
