    • 1342991 Boron; silicon; metal nitrides; titanium hydride PARLEE ANDERSON CORP 18 Jan 1971 2258/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Metals, or non-metals such as boron and silicon, which are readily capable of reacting with nitrogen or carbon to form nitride or carbide are reduced from their oxides by a carbothermic method using carbon or carbon source material in excess of stoichiometric requirements, in a molten solvent at temperatures above 600‹ K., the carbon monoxide partial pressure over the reaction mixture being maintained below the equilibrium value for the reaction. The metal solvent is one which lowers the reactivity of the reduced product below that required for the formation of carbide and is capable of forming stable compounds with the reduced product. Tin may be used as solvent metal in the production of boron or silicon or copper in the production of boron. By maintaining a partial pressure of nitrogen over the reaction mixture the reduced metal or non- metal may be obtained as a pure nitride product which can be separated from the solvent metal. In this way nitrides of such metals as niobium, tantalum, plutonium, uranium, zirconium and hafnium. When the reaction mixture contains a mixture of metals, specific gravity differences between the nitrides formed may allow a separation to be effected, lighter nitrides floating on the solvent metal while heavier nitrides sink. Alternatively, where titanium is the reactive metal a hydrogen atmosphere may be used to form titanium hydride which floats on the solvent and may be skimmed off.

    • 1284178 Producing refractory metal or alloy powder by reduction REDERIAKTIEBOLAGET NORDSTJERNAN 18 May 1970 [19 May 1969 2 April 1970] 23977/70 Heading C7D Powdered W, Mo, Ta, Nb, Re, Cr or alloy thereof e.g. W-Re is produced by reduction of the gaseous halide e.g. WCl 6 with a reducing gas comprising mainly H 2 , the halide and reducing gases e.g. from supply pipes 4, 5 with or without other gases e.g. Cl 2 , HCl or N 2 from pipe 6 being mixed in at least one duct 3 and pre-heated to, e.g. 20-150‹ C. above the minimum reaction temperature (300-330‹C. for WCl 6 ) using heating elements 7, before entering the reaction chamber 1. The particle size of the powder formed is adjusted by controlling one or more of the ratio of the reactants in the gases, its velocity or temperature; and preferably also the temperature of the reaction chamber, e.g. in zones by groups of heating elements 2, the temperature increasing in the direction of gas flow. A vibrator 10 and heat exchanger 8 (for cooling) may be mounted adjacent the mixing duct 3.
