    • The shortage of available iron for the growth of micro-organisms adversely, affects cultivation from materials to be examined like foodstuffs, medico-microbiological samples and from materials to be examined from the environment. The methods currently used capture such micro-organisms and add to them the more extensive characteristics needed for epidemiological research are material and time-consuming and give limited results. This applies especially to the cultivation of salmonella from food samples, which has not yet been successful enough to cover salmonelloses. The addition of iron chelators (microbial siderophores or synthetic iron chelators) as a growth supplement to the material to be examined, and/or the enriching and selective culture substances which can be used by the micro-organisms for their iron supply, makes possible a significant improvement in the cultivation or reisolation of the micro-organisms, both quantitatively (increasing sensitivity) and qualitatively (increasing selectivity). The addition of such iron chelators to micro-organism cultures makes product control possible in bio-technological and genetic engineering processes. The fields of application are medical microbiology, food microbiology, environmental microbial research, biotechnology and genetic engineering. A special field is the improvement of sensibility and selectivity in the cultivation of salmonella investigation materials by the addition of ferrioxamine siderophores, especially ferrioxamine G.
