    • The present invention relates to a method for producing components from a blank (P1-P4) made of a deep-drawable material, particularly steel using a free-flowing action medium. In the course of this method, the blank (P1-P4) is clamped in a forming device (U1, U2) and an action medium is applied to it. The blank (P1-P4) is then preformed by elevating the pressure (P) exercised by the action medium in a region of the blank (P1-P4) which is restricted to a section (V1, V2) of the blank surface and which partially covers the surface section (B1, B2) of the blank (P1-P4) from which the final form of the component is generated. Subsequently, the preformed blank (P1-P4) is finish formed using a forming tool (F1, F2). In this way, components having complex shapes may be produced with optimum exploitation of the properties of the material used.

    • Superplastic forming tools and method in which pairs of stacked metal blanks are serially loaded between heated forming dies that are moved to a closed position on each of the pair of blanks so that a partial perimeter gas seal is established therebetween. A pressure wedge is then introduced between the two blanks along one edge of the pair to act as a stopper or air seal to complete perimeter sealing thereof. The pressure wedge also establishes the operative position of a gas injection port, which directs pressurized air interiorly of the completed perimeter seal of the pair of blanks to force the blanks in opposite direction for the superplastic forming of a pair of discrete parts. The wedge and forming dies are then opened for the removal of a pair of formed parts and for the subsequent loading of additional pairs of stacked sheets for their simultaneous superplastic forming into pairs of parts. With this construction and process, the output of superplastic forming equipment can be multiplied for improved efficiency and for improved formation of parts.

    • A hydroforming apparatus includes an upper platen carrying an upper die section and a lower platen carrying a lower die section. The platens are connected together by tie rods extending through respective compression tubes. The upper and lower die sections have recessed areas formed therein that define a die cavity. When the lower die section is moved to a lowered position, a workpiece can be disposed in the recessed area formed therein. Then, the lower die section and the workpiece are elevated by cylinders such that the workpiece is enclosed within the die cavity and mechanically deformed by the cooperated upper and lower die sections. A support block is then moved between the hydroforming die and the lower platen. A cylinder array containing a plurality of pistons is next hydraulically actuated so as to securely clamp the hydroforming die between the cylinder array and the lower platen. While the cylinder array is actuated, pressurized fluid is supplied within the workpiece, deforming it into conformance with the die cavity.
