    • An intestine dysfunction treatment apparatus comprises an electric stimulation device (56) implanted in a patient, who suffers from intestine dysfunction. The stimulation device comprises electric conductors adapted to directly engage with a muscle that directly or indirectly affects the transportation of the content of the patient's intestines, for example the anal sphincter (58) or a portion of the muscle that contracts the bowels, to electrically stimulate the muscle to increase the tonus thereof. A control device (62) is provided for controlling a source of energy (64), which may or may not be implanted, to release electric energy for use in connection with the power of the stimulation device. The apparatus can be used for treating patients suffering from anal incontinence or constipation.

    • The invention relates to an anchoring device for urging a ligament transplant against the wall of a bone hole during ligament replacement and for fixing the anchor in position in the said bone hole. The device has a first component and a second component designed for mutual sliding co-operation between a first anchor inserting position and a second fixation position. The sliding co-operation is provided along respective parallel inner mating surfaces of each component which surfaces are each in angular relation to the respective component outer surfaces and in opposed angular relation to each other so that in the anchor insertion position the width of the said anchoring device is in an elongate narrow mode with respect to a bone hole and, in the fixation position, the width of the said anchoring device is in a compressed wide mode to thereby urge the ligament against the wall of the bone hole. A method of ligament fixation in a bone hole is also disclosed.

    • This invention relates to a surgical implant which contains a relatively soft component, such as a hydrogel or gel-like component, that is affixed to a harder and stiffer material. One such implant is designed to replace a segment of damaged cartilage in a knee, hip, shoulder, or other joint. Instead of attempting to bond a gel-like material to a hard surface with a relatively flat interface, this improved device provides a nullmulti-perforated non-planarnull (MP/NP) interface between the two types of material. This type of MP/NP interface can provide a stronger and more durable gel structure, and it can enable the water molecules in the gel component to disseminate and distribute compressive and shear loads in a more even manner, reducing the risk of tearing or other damage. As one example, this type of MP/NP interface can resemble a moderately thin layer that has been molded into a nullwafflenull surface, and provided with holes passing through various facets of the material, oriented in different directions. In one embodiment, this type of implant can provide a wet hydrogel surface on the articulating side, nestled within a supporting plastic shell that can be securely anchored to a prepared bone surface. In an alternate embodiment, the MP/NP layer can be bonded to a porous anchoring layer made of a biocompatible material that will promote tissue ingrowth into the anchoring layer.

    • A surgical implant for securing ligament grafts into a joint. The implant is formed entirely of allograft cortical bone, and has a tapered tip with a suture eye. A length of suture is knotted or looped through the eye. The suture is used to draw the implant transversely through a looped graft construct to fix the graft by spanning a bone socket, for example. In a preferred embodiment, the implant is used for knee ligament repair by forming a longitudinal socket in a bone. A flexible strand is drawn with the pin through the bone. A looped portion of the flexible strand is diverted so as to protrude out of the entrance to the longitudinal socket. The ends of the flexible strand remain accessible on either side of the bone. The ligament graft is captured within the strand loop protruding from the entrance to the socket. The strand is retracted into the socket, drawing the graft into the socket by pulling on the accessible ends of the flexible strand. The graft is fixed in the socket using the transverse implant.
