    • A seeding machine is provided with banks of individual seed hoppers for directing seed to auxiliary seed hoppers located on individual planting units. The individual seed hoppers of each bank are provided with adjoining walls. The adjoining walls have notches so that seed in one individual seed hopper can flow into an adjoining individual seed hopper. A portion of the planting units can be disabled by placing them in a non-working position. The individual seed hoppers supplying seed to the disabled planting units are provided with removable baffles. Each removable baffle is provided with a downwardly extending leg that cooperates with the notches to prevent seed in an active individual hopper from entering an inactive individual hopper.

    • The invention provides a method of reducing plugging of a no-till seeder with crop residue by guiding the furrow openers of the seeder between the standing stubble rows of the previous crop. A guidance system is provided comprising sensing means to sense the standing stubble rows from the previous crop and to send a steering signal in response to changes in the relative position of the seeder to the standing stubble rows; and adjusting means to adjust the travel path of the seeder in response to the steering signals. The sensing means can sense the location of the standing stubble rows by contact therewith or by sensing the furrow from which the standing stubble rows extend. The position of the seeder relative to the towing vehicle is adjusted in response to steering signals sent by the sensing means.

    • The invention comprises an improvement for finger type seed meters. The improvement is a backing or wear plate of lubricious material with a seed release and an exit. The improved also has a cutout section and a plurality of variable inserts to get accurate seed spacing of a variety of size and shapes of seeds. Each insert of the meter includes a seed release area having varied shapes and depths of projections and depressions to accomplish accurate and timely release from the fingers of seeds of various sizes and shapes. Each insert also has an improved seed exit or void. The exit void being varied both in dimension and contour to substantially eliminate seed rejections and to ensure seed ejection into a seed tube and thence to the soil.
