    • A cutting tool assembly comprising an elongated tool shank (1) having a shank holding portion (8) and an exchangeable adaptor (2) having an insert retaining portion for retaining a replaceable cutting insert (3) and an adaptor mounting portion (42) releasably secured to the shank holding portion (8) by two clamping screws (4).     • A clamp pin tool holder (10) for clamping an insert (18) in a tool holder includes a bore (19) for receiving a clamp pin (20) and a bore (15) for receiving a lock screw (30). The clamp pin (20) includes a cam portion (22) with angled surfaces (28b, 28c). The lock screw (30) is rotatably mounted to the bore (15) of the tool holder (10) and includes angled surfaces (32c, 34c) for engaging the angled surfaces (28b, 28c) of the clamp pin (20). When the lock screw (30) is rotated in one direction, one angled surface (32c) on the lock screw (30) and one angled surface (28b) on the clamp pin (20) engage each other and acts as a conical wedge to cause the clamp pin to move relative to the lock screw. When the lock screw (30) is rotated in the opposite direction, another angled surface (34c) on the lock screw engages a different angled surface (28c) on the clamp pin (20) in a similar manner to cause the clamp pin (20) to move in an opposite direction.

    • A quick change tool holder (10) is provided for cutter inserts (16) on machine tools which comprises a housing (13) which is adapted to receive and conform to the shape of a cutter insert (16). A pivoting arm (12) is mounted in the insert housing (13) and rotates about a pivot (30) therein. The pivoting arm (12) has a clamp portion (22) extending from the pivot (30) to a position over a seat portion (18) which is adapted to engage a cutter insert (16). In addition, the pivoting arm (12) has an arm (32) extending from the pivot (30) opposite the clamp portion (22). Lastly, a cam (14) is engaged by a distal end (34) of the arm (32). The cam (14) has a clamp position which forces the clamp portion (22) to engage a cutter insert (16) and a release position which forces the clamp portion (22) to disengage from a cutter insert (16) to allow thereof. The cam (14) moves between the release position and the clamp position.

    • An indexable insert (10) is located on a toolholder (40) with reference to bearing surfaces (80,82) on the insert and the toolholder which are proximate to the active cutting edge. These bearing surfaces (80,82) are internal to the peripheral (side) flanks (18) of the insert. Location of the insert in the toolholder is substantially independent of the relation between the toolholder pocket sidewalls and the peripheral flanks (18) of the insert, thereby eliminating sources of error from insert manufacture and pocket manufacture. The insert (10) and toolholder (40) have locating units (30,32) disposed thereon adapted to matingly engage each other when the insert (10) is placed in the toolholder (40). At least one of the locator elements (30,32) has a bearing surface (80,82) or surfaces that extends through 360° and resulting in less movement of the insert (10) during use.
