    • A digital film processing system is provided. Each scanning module in the system has a removable mounting panel to which the scanning and transportation components are secured. An opening or door can be provided between the modules to compensate for film buckling. The film can be tensioned during scanning for control over its position. Tape can be attached to side edges of the film, and the tape can be moved through the system, avoiding contact with the film. Also, a belt transport system can be utilized to contact the film (or attached tape) only on the lateral edges. The film may be threaded through the system by using a leader attached to the lead edge of the film. To transport the film and leader, a transport mechanism having a roller connecting a pair of sprockets may be used, and a single drive unit may be provided to pull the film.

    • A photographic film scanner which includes: a carrier receiver section for receiving one of: (a) the first film carrier having an accommodation section, for accommodating a cartridge in which a rolled film is enclosed, and a conveying mechanism, for conveying the rolled film; and (b) the second film carrier for holding a film. The photographic film scanner further includes a scanner for reading image information from one of the rolled film, accommodated in the cartridge, and the film, held by the second film carrier; a detector for detecting a load of the first film carrier and the second film carrier into the carrier receiver; a contact point for electrically connecting the carrier receiver section and the first film carrier; and a discrimination circuit for automatically discriminating between the first film carrier and the second film carrier by sending electric signals through the contact point when the detector detects the load of one of the first film carrier and the second film carrier.

    • A picture reader in which frame position data showing the positions of left and right ends of frames are generated by controlling a CCD line sensor (5) and film carrying roller (103) so that a plurality of pictures recorded on an optical film (1) can be successively read at a prescribed sampling rate from the latest frame at pre-scanning time. In the course of main scanning, the picture reader controls the read starting timing and read ending timing of the sensor (5), which are controlled based on the frame position data obtained at the pre-scanning time, at the time of controlling the sensor (5) and a film carrier (100) so that the plurality of pictures recorded on the optical film can be successively read at a sampling rate higher than the above-mentioned prescribed sampling rate from the oldest frame. As a result, the picture reader can accurately obtain the picture data of the pictures in the frames without causing any positional deviation. Since the prescanning is made at a lower sampling rate, the frame position data can be obtained in a short time.
