    • Interior vehicle instrumentation and/or console lighting is provided by an interior rearview mirror assembly or interior lamp assembly incorporating a non-incandescent, directed, low level, low power, non-glare producing light emitting source. The source illuminates portions of the vehicle interior such as the instrumentation or controls in the instrument panel or console area. One or more of such light emitting sources is optionally mounted on or within the mirror case or mirror support separate from any conventional incandescent lamp or lamps which may be mounted in the mirror assembly to provide general interior lighting. Alternately, the light emitting source can be mounted on or within an interior vehicle lamp assembly such as a dome lamp, rail lamp, or the like. Preferably, the light emitting source is a solid state lamp such as a light emitting diode, is controlled via the ignition switch and/or a rheostat/dimmer switch, and most preferably provides a maximum illumination of about 0.2 to 4.0 lux at 22 to 26 inches at about 20 mA to about 50 mA or less current and about 2.0 volts to about 5.0 volts or less.

    • A lighting system for a vehicle includes a meter lamp installed in the interior of the vehicle. The meter lamp backlights a dial board of a combination meter. The meter lamp is supplied with a voltage from a battery and lighted up when an ignition switch is closed. An interior lighting lamp is further installed in the interior of the vehicle. The interior lighting lamp is supplied with a voltage from the battery and lighted up when a lighting switch is closed. The system further includes a rheostat switch for adjusting illuminance of the meter lamp and the interior lighting lamp. When one of the meter and interior lighting lamps is lighted up, the rheostat switch adjusts the illuminance of that one of the meter and interior lighting lamps and, when the meter and interior lighting lamps are both lighted up, the rheostat switch simultaneously adjusts the illuminance of the meter and interior lighting lamps.

    • A display panel integrated with EL can be obtained by printing EL at the back of a light permeable substrate, and covering the front surface of the substrate and the rearface of EL with a moisture proof film for insulating and protecting the EL from the surrounding atmosphere. Alternatively, the film may cover the substrate and EL entirely. An indication mark is printed at the surface of the moisture proof film or the light permeable substrate. The light permeable front electrode, the light emission layer and the back electrode are successively printed to the rearface of the light permeable substrate. If the indication mark is printed on the surface of the substrate, the attenuation of decay of the light emission from the emission layer can be suppressed and the brightness of the display mark improved by not forming the insulation layer at the back of the substrate. Alternatively, by forming the insulation layer at the back of the substrate, the entire thickness and the weight of the display panel can be decreased and the production step simplified.

    • A lighting control system with self calibration for employing the entire physical travelling range of a dimmer switch. A lookup table and linear interpolation are used in conjunction with the voltage output of the dimmer switch in order to identify the appropriate duty cycle of a Pulse Width Modulated signal which drives the lamps in the system. Two of the values in the lookup table are default minimum and maximum values of voltage which can be expected from a worst case switch device. The system dynamically determines and stores any new maximum or minimum voltage which is received from the dimmer switch. These dynamically determined minimum and maximum values are used to replace the default values in the lookup table thus calibrating the lookup table. The calibrated lookup will take into account the operating parameters of the actual switch in the vehicle and will therefore always produce a corresponding change in illumination intensity over the entire physical range of the dimmer switch.

A potentiometer or other device may be employed to adjust the light intensity. A related method is provided.

    • The present invention comprises a method and apparatus for providing user selectable multi-color illumination to automotive instrument panel instruments. In one embodiment, an instrument panel or individual instrument is supplied with a plurality of differently colored illumination sources. The intensity of each color is individually controllable, allowing the user to select both intensity and hue of instrument illumination. In one embodiment, an instrument panel illumination system comprises three light sources that produce nominally white light and three associated diffusing filters, one red, one green, one blue. In another embodiment different colors of illumination are provided by light sources producing different colors of light, such as, for example, a plurality of high intensity red, green, and blue light emitting diodes ("LED's"). In one embodiment, a plurality of triplets of red, green and blue high intensity LED's are mounted above a white diffusing filter. In one embodiment, a plurality of colored light sources are mounted in an instrument housing behind the instrument's bezel.
