    • A reciprocation pump has a supply liquid-side sub-pumping chamber and a waste liquid side sub-pumping chamber for containing and sending out liquid adapted to communicate with the supply liquid-side pumping chamber and with the waste liquid-side pumping chamber, respectively. The supply liquid-side sub-pumping chamber and the waste liquid-side sub-pumping chamber are interlocked with a reciprocation mechanism to vary their volume reversely to that of the volume variation of the supply liquid-side pumping chamber and the waste liquid-side pumping chamber, respectively. The reciprocating motion of the reciprocation mechanism enables the liquid to be supplied to the objective apparatus through the supply liquid-side pumping chamber and the supply liquid-side sub-pumping chamber. Also, it enables the waste liquid from the objective apparatus to be discharged to the outside through the waste liquid-side pumping chamber and the waste liquid-side sub-pumping chamber.

    • A system for handling two liquid streams comprises an hydraulic circuit including a pair of receptacles each provided with movable partition means dividing it into first and second chambers. Rod means extending through a first chamber of each receptacle connects the partition means and is effective to cause reciprocation of one partition means to be repeated by the other so that as the first chamber of one receptacle is expanded, the first chamber of the other receptacle is contracted. A quantity of the first liquid is delivered alternately to the first and second chambers of one receptacle as those chambers expand. As those chambers contract first liquid is passed through conduit means from the first and second chambers of said one receptacle to the first and second chambers, respectively, of said other receptacle. A source of second liquid is connected to said conduit means and liquid removal means is connected to said circuit to remove liquid from said circuit in quantities equal to the quantity of second liquid admitted to the circuit.

The dialysate supply pump and the dialysate discharge pump further include a tube pressurizing member and a one-way valve or a roller and a roller driver. The blood tube includes a first blood tube in which blood of a patient is supplied to the hemodialyzer and a second blood tube in which blood passing through the hemodialyzer is returned to the patient.

    • Hemodialysis ultrafiltration apparatus comprises a dialyzer. A closed circuit is provided for supplying fresh dialysate to and for removing spent dialysate from the dialyzer. Blood is supplied to and removed from the dialyzer. The closed circuit for supplying fresh dialysate and removing spent dialysate is apportioned into below mean dialyzer blood pressure and above atmospheric pressure sections, with the dialyzer being positioned in the below mean dialyzer blood pressure section. A mechanism is provided for controlling the pressure of fresh dialysate introduced into the below mean dialyzer blood pressure section to substantially match the pressure on the dialysate side of the dialyzer. A mechanism is provided for controlling the above atmospheric pressure portion of the spent dialysate circuit. A pump removes spent dialysate of equivalent ultrafiltrate volume from the closed circuit to control the rate of ultrafiltrate removal from blood in the dialyzer, thus affecting the pressure on the dialysate side of the dialyzer required to sustain that rate.A method of hemodialytic ultrafiltration is carried out substantially in accordance with the above-described apparatus.
