摘要： A binocular head mounted display system is shown utilizing an aspheric lens (20, 22) in each of the user's right-eye and left-eye optical paths. The aspheric lens (20 or 22) is formed with a number of concentric zones for controlling the distance at which an image of displayed information is projected from the user and to minimize distortions across the virtual image. The distance between each lens (20 or 22) and its respective display (24 or 26) is independently variable. Further, the distance between the optical system as a whole and the user's eyes is variable.

摘要： A head mounted display system (10) is shown that is modular such that various components of the system are removably mounted and/or adjustably mounted on a frame (12) that is supported on a user's head. The head mounted display system (10) can thus accomodate different users and components of different configurations. In particular, the display system (10) includes a mirror (28) through which a displayed image is viewed, the position of the mirror (28) being adjustable and the mirror (28) being removable from the frame (12) of the display system (10). The display system (10) further includes a nose piece (24) that is adjustably mounted in the frame (12) so as to allow the distance between the frame member (12) supporting the display (26) and a nose bridge (220) to be varied. The nose piece (24) is further completely removable from the frame (12) of the display system (10) so as to allow the display system (10) to accomodate a user wearing conventional glasses.

摘要： A support is shown for an image display system that is to be worn on a user's head. The image display system (10) includes an image generating module with at least one optical element (18) into which a user looks to view a generated image and an electronics module (16), both of these modules being removably mountable on the support (12). The support includes a head hugging member (34) having a front portion, a pair of side portions, a top portion and a back portion integrally formed from a material with multidirectional elasticity so that the side, top and back portions conform to and hug the user's head. The support (12) also includes a rigid bill (36) secured to the front portion of the head hugging member (34) so that it extends outwardly from a user's forehead for providing a rigid support onto which the image generating module is mounted. Whereas the image generating module is mounted on the front of the support, the electronics module is removably mounted on a back portion of the support to provide a head mounted display system the weight of which is distributed over the user's entire head. In a second embodiment the support is formed of a cloth cap with a rigid bill for supporting the image generating module.

摘要： A binocular head mounted display unit utilizing a single display and binocular optical system is shown for projecting an enlarged image of displayed information in the direct line of sight and central field of view of each of the user's eyes, while maintaining the user's peripheral vision free from obstruction to allow the user to selectively focus on the virtual image or not. The binocular optical system directs the user's eyes inward at an angle that is natural for a person viewing an object at a distance that is less than infinity. Further, the binocular optical system automatically compensates for variations in the interpupillary distances of various users, wherein those variations may be as great as one inch. This head mounted display unit is suitable for a variety of applications, including virtual reality applications, as well as a display for a compact portable computer.

摘要： A miniature display system (10) uses a reflective micro-display (12) that reflects light perpendicular to the surface of the display (36) to generate an image. Light from an off-axis light source (18) is polarized and reflected b y a prism (26) to provide an on-axis illumination light for the display. The prism uses total internal reflection and/or a polarizer (24) as a beam splitting surface so as to increase the brightness of the image generated by the display. The optical system provides a virtual image (52) with a large field of view so that the small display system can be used in portable, hand - held or head mounted system to display a large amount of information to the user.
