    • Multilayer rigid/flex printed circuits are fabricated from a novel basestock composite (10) comprising two copper conducting sheets (12, 14), bonded to insulator layers (16, 18) comprised of fiberglass sheets impregnated with an adhesive such as epoxy, wherein the insulator layers (16, 18) are both affixed to a release layer (20) wherein said release layer (20) is not coextensive with the borders of the insulator layers. The basestock composite can then be imaged and etched on the conductor layers to form conductor patterns (22) and the basestock can be cut at a point (24) internal to its borders and into the release layer (20) thereby separating two imaged and etched conductor layers (22), along with removal of the release material from the insulating layer.

    • Methods and apparatus for non-linearizing modulo 2 addition based encryption by block substitution techniques (22 & 30) which allows use of the substitution scheme with relatively simple hardware and yet makes cryptanalysis more difficult. The basic block substitution (22 & 30), a one to one mapping of n-bit binary numbers onto themselves, is based on the fact that certain permutations of the n-bit binary numbers define linear orthomorphisms, which enable block substitution by modulo 2 addition of one permuted set of numbers to another. These equations representing the linear orthomorphism have an additive relationship when viewed as vectors, and in fact, form an additive group in the algebraic sense. The permutations of the n-bit binary (22) numbers which define these linear orthomosphisms have the further property that any power of these permutations, that is, applying the permutations successively to the previously permuted numbers (30), generates a new linear orthomorphism.

    • Improved non-electrostatic spray coating process and apparatus (100) are provided. The apparatus includes a plurality of vertically-oriented, linearly configured, adjustable spray means (23) for spraying a liquid material on a surface of the workpiece. Means (20) are provided for conveying the workpiece in a travel path (d) past the spraying means, the spraying means being adapted to produce substantially identical elliptically-shaped spray patterns and also being displaced from the workpiece by a distance (D), each elliptically-shaped pattern having a major axis height (h), the patterns overlapping each other with an overlap factor (F) within a range of between 10 and 50 percent of the major axis height. Also provided are means for determining the position of the workpiece relative to the spraying means, and means for activating the spray means to spray only when a workpiece is in a target position in the travel path. The process and apparatus of the present invention permit significant reduction in over-spray conditions as well as, the disadvantages and drawbacks associated therewith, without causing corresponding reduction in coating efficiency.

    • A method is disclosed for preparing and recovering metal nitrides from their ferrometal alloys and nickel metal alloys. Exemplary steps of the process involve niobium nitride prepared from ferroniobium alloys which are first hydrided to provide a friable comminutable product. The hydrided alloy is then charged through feed hopper (2) to the reactor (9). The ferroniobium hydride is then nitrided as a nitrogen containing gas is introduced to reaction vessel (9) through inlet (4). The pressure conditions of the reaction vessel (9) are controlled by conduit (21) in communication with pressure vent (20) and inlet (15) which optionally provides for an overpressure of inert gas such as helium. The conditions of the nitriding step are controlled to form distinct phases of iron nitride and niobium nitride respectively.
