    • 10,609. Campbell, R. H. April 29. Pressure - relieving devices f o r fluids; lift valves. - Containers cr cylinders of comparatively large capacity for compressed or liquefied gas are provided with a plug containing a loose washer or cap acting as a closure and safety valve, the projecting part of the plug being screw-threaded so that a single perforating and drawing - off device with a renewable perforator and valve face may be applied to a number of containers. The container 1 is provided with an externally screw-threaded plug 3 fitted with a loose washer or cap 4, which is shaped so that it allows gas to pass over, round, and under it while the container is being charged, after which it is compressed by a screwed piece 6 so as to form a gas-tight closure. Fig. 2 shows a perforating and drawing-off device having a renewable piercer 18 and valve seat 24 applied to a container. The piercer is confined within the valve stem by a screw 21, and the valve and piercer are operated by a hand-wheel 23 in the usual way, so that the valve and stem do not rotate. After the washer has been perforated, the piercer and valve are raised and the gas escapes round the stem of the piercer. Specification 16,330/09, [Class 8(ii), Air and gases, Treating &c.], is referred to.

    • 3279. Read, H. V. R., and Campbell, R. H. Feb. 13. Direct air-pressure apparatus.-Fire-extinguishing liquid in a vessel 1 is forced out by means of compressed gas in a capsule 8, the top of which is held in a part 5 on the end of a screw 3, which passes through a bracket 2 fixed to the vessel 1, the end of the screw being capable of turning in the part 5. By the rotation of a handle 4 at the upper end of the screw 3, the capsule 8 is forced against an opener or piercer 9 on a sliding stem 10 perforated for the passage of the gas, and the gas thus liberated passes through a valve 11 opened by the movement of the stem 10 and through a passage 7 into the liquid in the vessel 1. In order to prevent the screw 3 from being operated accidentally, it is embraced by a recessed part of a lever 13 pivoted on the bracket 2. The lever acts as a stop between the bracket 2 and the head of the screw, and is secured by a sealed wire or string which is broken on withdrawal of the lever. The liquid passes to the flexible discharge pipe 18 through a pipe 16 and a valve 17, which may be opened automatically by the raising of the pipe 18 and closed by the lowering thereof. The filling- opening 19 is provided with a depending tube 21 and with a screw-cap 20. A handle 22 is fixed to the vessel 1. According to the Provisional Specification, the capsule-opening device may be of the kind described in Specification No. 1503, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Air and gases, Compressing &c.].
