    • A method and apparatus for communicating a real time media input over a network. The apparatus encodes the input into data packets having a number of frames ordered according to a first variable. A receiving device unpacks and buffers the unpacked data packets for playout according to a second variable. The receiving device generates utility parameters for evaluating a dynamic characteristic of the network that transports the data packets. The receiving device selects a preferred utility parameter and adjusts the first and second variables according to the selected utility parameter. The method includes encoding an analog input into data packets that are transported to a receiving device. The method also includes unpacking the data packets, buffering the unpacked data packets according to a second variable, and generating at least two utility parameters that represent a dynamic characteristic of a network. The method also includes selecting a preferred utility parameter and adjusting the first and the second variables according to the selected preferred utility parameter.

    • Indication and interrupt signals generated by a network adapter (3) representing asynchronous events are managed by a host system (1). The network adapter (3) comprises a first mask logic (10) for selectively disabling the indication signals from being stored in a first memory location (10a-c) by the host writing to a first mask register (10). A second mask logic which is coupled to the first memory location (10a-c) also selectively disables the indication signals from being stored in a second memory location (10a-c) creating two levels of status information. The indication signals may also be disabled from being stored in the second memory location (10a-c) responsive to the host writing to a second mask register. The first memory location (10a-c) may be read from the host (1) in order to determine whether a network event occurred during an interrupt service routine, while interrupt means (10) generates an interrupt signal to the host (1) responsive to the value in the second memory location (10a-c). A third level of control is provided by an internal counter which allows for automatic enabling and/or disabling of a plurality of indications and interrupts with and without explicit commands in the host driver subroutines.

    • A personal information device (PID) is coupled to an IP Telephony phone in order to provide end-to-end connectivity to another PID through a network. The architecture disclosed includes a pair of internet-enabled phones that are able to establish a call session using a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and a Session Description Protocol (SDP). Each phone is also provided with an interface configured to communicate with a PID. Each PID is registered to a corresponding internet-enabled phone using each PID user's SIP URL. The user of a first PID connected to a first phone requests a call to a SIP URL corresponding to the user of the second PID that is connected to a second phone. The SIP URL for the user of the second PID is resolved to the network address of the second phone and connection is established between the first and second phones. The connection includes a media stream for transferring data between each of the PIDs. A data object transmitted by the first PID through its interface with the first phone is transmitted to the second phone through the media stream of the connection between the first and second phones. The data object received by the second phone is transmitted to the second PID through the interface between the second phone and the second PID.

    • A method and system for analytically and dynamically generating a repeatable digital probing signal representing an answer tone. The probing signal may conveniently be used by a modem to determine whether characteristics of the communication path between the modem and another end are sufficiently similar to these of a previous communication path, such that a shortened training sequence can be employed between two ends. When the modem initiates communication, the modem applies a predefined algorithm to dynamically generate a sequence of samples representing an answer tone signal. Next, the modem encodes the generated sequence of samples into a sequence of codewords and sends it to a second modem via a transmission path. When the second modem receives each codeword of the sequence, the second modem dynamically generates a respective codeword and compares it to the received codeword. Using the received sequence of codewords and the dynamically generated sequence of codewords, the second modem may determine whether a shortened training sequence may be employed.

    • Support for priority and IP security packets, and other protocols at the network interface level and in conjunction with FIFO-based packet buffers is provided by allowing out of order processing of certain packets in the FIFO. The optimized character of FIFO for sequential transfer is maintained, while particular types of packets are processed out of order to achieve minimum latency and maximum data security in an intelligent network interface card (10). A buffer (15) stores data packets in an order of receipt. Logic is included in the network interface to transfer packets out of the buffer (15) according to the order of receipt, and according to the respective packet types so that packets having a particular packet type are transferred out of the order of receipt relative to packets having other packet types.
