    • In a burning condition detecting device in an internal combustion engine in which a high voltage is applied to a spark plug by way of a diode and a series gap of a distributor. A voltage charger circuit is provided to on-off actuates the primary coil to induce a charging voltage in the secondary circuit either during establishing the spark discharge or during a predetermined period of time immediately after an end of the spark discharge. The charging voltage is applied to the spark plug to electrically charge a stray capacity inherent in the spark plug so as to form a sparkplug voltage. A voltage divider circuit is provided to divide the sparkplug voltage in accordance with a high impedance element and a low impedance element. A voltage level detecting circuit is provided to detect a sparkplug voltage waveform divided by the voltage divider circuit. A distinction circuit detects a degree of variation of an attenuation time period of the spark plug voltage waveform so as to determine a variation of an air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture gas injected into a cylinder of the internal combustion engine by a fuel injector.

    • A spark plug including: a cylindrical metal shell; a cylindrical insulator fixed to the metal shell; a center electrode having its leading end protruding from a leading end of the insulator and its trailing end fixed to the insulator, and a ground electrode having one end fixed to the metal shell and forming a discharge gap between the ground electrode and the center electrode. The ground electrode includes a precious metal alloy portion containing: 50 weight % or more of a first component of one of Rh and Pt; less than 50 weight % of a second component of the other of Rh and Pt; and optionally a third component containing at least one of: Ni in an amount of less than 7 weight %; and Zr in an amount of less than 2 weight % the content of the third component being less than that of the second component.

    • In a spark plug, a cylindrical metal shell (1) is provided whose inner wall has a rear section and a front section to respectively serve as a diameter-increased section and a diameter-decreased section with a seat portion (1) as a boundary therebetween. An insulator (2) is fixedly placed within the metal shell (1) so that a front end surface (21) of the insulator (2) extends beyond a front end surface (12) of the metal shell (1) with a shoulder portion (231) of an insulator nose (23) engaged against the seat portion (11) of the metal shell (1) by way of a packing (10).     • In a snap-in type spark plug voltage probe device, the insulator base has an upper half and a lower half, both ends of which are integrally connected by means of a flexible portion. The upper half and the lower half have a plurality of grooves in which spark plug cables are placed. The upper half and the lower half are joined together by the flexible portion when in a closed position. The upper half has an opening to receive a protrusion provided on the lower half of the insulator base to maintain the upper half of the insulator base along the grooves, providing static capacity between the electrode layer and the spark plug cables when voltage is applied across the spark plugs. A lead wire electrically connects the electrode layer to a microcomputer so as to analyze the burning condition based on the static capacity between the electrode layer and the spark plug cables. An electrical shield layer is embedded in the insulator base in the proximity of the electrode layer and connected to the internal combustion engine by way of a ground wire located at a side of the electrode layer remote from the grooves so as to electrically shield the electrical layer. An insulator sheet is embedded in the insulator base and located between the electrode layer and the electrical shield layer.

    • A misfire detector for use in an internal combustion engine has an ignition coil including a primary coil and a secondary coil. An interrupter circuit is provided for on-off actuation of primary current flowing through a primary circuit of the ignition coil. A distributor has a series gap provided in a secondary circuit of the ignition coil, and a spark plug is adapted to be energized from the ignition coil through the series gap of the distributor. A voltage charging circuit works to electrically charge a stray capacity inherent in the spark plug immediately after an end of a spark action of the spark plug. A spark plug voltage detector circuit distinguishes the voltage waveform of more than a predetermined reference voltage level so as to deform the voltage waveform into output signals. On the basis of the width of the output signals, a distinction circuit determines whether or not the spark action ignites an air-fuel mixture in a cylinder of the internal combustion engine.
