    • A forceps includes first and second shafts each having a jaw. At least one jaw is moveable from an open to a closed position. At least one jaw includes a blade slot for reciprocation of a blade therethrough. An actuation assembly disposed within one shaft is configured for translating the blade between a retracted and at least one extended position. The blade extends into the blade slot in the extended position(s). The actuation assembly includes an actuator extending from the shaft and engaging an actuator rack. A gear is coupled to the actuator rack and is rotatably disposed on a pin. A blade rack is coupled to the gear and has the blade disposed at an end thereof. A gear box is configured to house the gear and at least a portion of the actuator and blade racks. The actuator and blade racks are translatable through the gear box.

    • An electrosurgical pencil is provided and includes an elongated housing having an electrocautery blade supported therein and extending distally from the housing. The electrocautery blade is connected to a source of electrosurgical energy. The pencil further includes a plurality of activation switches supported on the housing for activating etectrocautery blade. Each activation switch is configured and adapted to selectively complete a control loop extending from the source of electrosurgical energy upon actuation thereof. In use, actuation of at least one of the plurality of activation switches produces a dividing with hemostatic effect at the electrocautery blade. The electrosurgical pencil further includes at least one voltage divider network supported on the housing. The at least one voltage divider network is electrically connected to the source of electrosurgical energy and controls the intensity of electrosurgical energy being delivered to the electrosurgical pencil.

An actuation assembly is disposed within one shaft and is configured for translating the blade between retracted and extended positions. The blade extends at least partially through the blade slot in the extended position. The actuation assembly includes an actuator engaged to a belt disposed within the shaft. The belt is configured for rotation about at least one pulley. A blade holder having the blade connected thereto is engaged to the belt. The blade holder defines a pre-determined load limit that, when exceeded, disengages the blade holder from the belt. Translating the actuator proximally translates the blade distally to the extended position when the blade holder is engaged to the belt.
