    • A device for sensing the presence of and measuring the concentration of a specific non-aqueous particle or gas material in an environment, the device comprising an interdigitated capacitor having at least a pair of selected covering layers thereupon, said pair of layers comprising a first passive electrically insulative layer and a second material layer having a spacial relationship to said first layer, said second layer selectively permeable to the specific material to be sensed and measured; said second coating, when juxtaposed said first coating, selectively permitting permeability of the particular material sought to be sensed and measured, and when spaced apart, permitting passage through of the specific material in order that the material may migrate to the proximity of the first coating and thereby be sensed and measured. The presence of the specific material modifies the dielectric constant of the dielectric in the interdigitated capacitor electric field and thus the capacitor's capacitance, whereupon the interdigitated capacitor's capacitance is compared with a proximate temperature sensing interdigitated capacitor in a capacitance sensing circuit and by the change of the capacitance, the presence and concentration of the specific material determined.

    • An intravenous fluid warmer includes an electrically heated warmer module receiving a low volume (10 ml.) disposable cartridge through which the fluid being heated flows. The module is configured as two spaced concentric elongated metallic heating elements having attached electric heaters and defining therebetween an elongated plenum adapted to receive the disposable cartridge. The temperature of the heating elements is individually monitored by separate sensors and an electronic temperature control module maintains the inner heating element at a slightly higher temperature (36.degree. C.) than the temperature (34.degree. C.) at which the outer heating element is maintained. The inner heating element is free floating through a limited range to accommodate manufacturing differences is the disposable cartridge. The cartridge, made of polystyrene or polycarbonate plastic, nests in the plenum in contact with the heating elements. The cartridge has a fluid inlet and outlet at one end and internal guide vanes for spreading the fluid throughout the cartridge for thorough heating prior to discharge.

    • A noninvasive blood pressure measuring device includes display means which may be digital readouts, a sphygmomanometer or other similar means, a compression cuff, a first flexible tube, a second flexible tube, an air leak valve and monitoring, control and display circuitry. Within the compression cuff is an inflatable bladder which extends in a longitudinal direction for substantially the entire length of the compression cuff. The monitoring, control and display circuitry includes a piezoelectric crystal assembly which provides electrical signals in response to air pressure levels and changes within the first flexible tube. The first tube connects this piezoelectric crystal assembly with the compression cuff and the second tube has a hand pump at one end for inflating the bladder. The air leak valve is in line with the first tube and the air leak valve has a continuously open air escape aperture of a size which corresponds to a predetermined leak rate proportional to the pressure in the bladder. When a sphygmomanometer is incorporated as part of the display means, a branch tube connects the first flexible tube to the sphygmomanometer and a pair of light-emitting diodes mounted to the dial face of the sphygmomanometer indicate when sphygmomanometer readings should be taken for systolic and diastolic conditions. When digital readouts and a microprocessor are used as part of the monitoring, control and display circuitry, data such as, for example, heart rate and mean pressure in addition to systolic and diastolic pressures are automatically presented and may be read directly.
