    • A heat exchange process and apparatus are especially suited for use in heat recovery applications, especially in a run-around heat exchanger. The run-around heat recovery system has two liquid to gas heat echangers (10, 12), one for heat transfer with stale air being exhausted and one for heat transfer with fresh air being taken in. The two heat exchangers (10, 12) are linked with a common coupling liquid so that heat may be extracted from one of the air flows and added to the other. To improve the heat transfer process, a gas is injected into the liquid just before it enters one or both of the heat exchangers. The resultant mixed phase flow produces a much higher heat transfer coefficient in the heat exchangers (10, 12), yielding a significant improvement in the system performance.

    • A crop harvester has bristle guards (39) mounted on the cutter bar (14) as crop lifters and to capture fruit lost by dehiscence during cutting. Each bristle guard is a set of laterally oriented bristles (44). Dehisced fruit is swept into the header by a pickup reel (16) having bristle bats (74). The bristles (76) are supported on the leading side by a strip (78) of flexible belting. The belting protects the bristle bats against being cut by the cutter bar. The crops are supported against being pushed forward by the bristle bats (74) of the reel. The reel diameter is reduced to about one-half normal and the reel index is increased to provide an aggressive reel operation, ensuring that plants are properly engaged in the bristle guards for cutting.

    • A desiccated mature gymnosperm somatic embryo characterized by having a moisture content which is lower than the moisture content of its corresponding zygotic embryo and a dry weight and per embryo lipid content which are higher than the lipid content and dry weight of its corresponding gymnosperm zygotic embryo. Preferred desiccated gymnosperm somatic embryos are conifer somatic embryos having a moisture content ranging between 10 and 55 %. Also within the scope of the invention is a method for producing desiccated somatic embryos. The method comprises developing immature embryos in a medium comprising at least one non-permeating water stress agent, a metabolizable carbon source and a growth regulator having an influence on embryo development for a period of time sufficient to yield the recovery of mature somatic embryos having a moisture content which is lower than the moisture content of corresponding zygotic embryos. The method can optionally include a secondary desiccation treatment to further reduce the moisture content of the embryos.
