    • An ultrasonic surgical aspirator having an improved irrigation/aspiration manifold and components to facilitate quick connections of the irrigation and aspiration lines to a handpiece. In combination with a handle assembly having an ultrasonic vibrator for vibrating an ultrasonic tip and a nosecone, a nosecone extension defining a rotating joint for connection to the nosecone in an articulating joint for connection to a rigid or flexible flue is provided. The nosecone extension further defines an irrigation cowl having an irrigation port for receiving an irrigation connector for connecting the irrigation fluid to the nosecone extension for passage of irrigation fluid through the nosecone extension and a flue about the surgical tip. An aspiration tubulation connector adapted to securely fit a slot through the nosecone and nosecone extension connects an aspiration port on the tip to the aspiration tube for connection to a pump into a discard area. An alternative manifold assembly includes a nosecone extension adapter defining a rotating joint for connecting to the nosecone in a cylindrical portion for connection to an extender sheath, the opposite end of which is connected to a flue adapter defining an articulating joint for connection to a flue. Such an alternative manifold assembly is particularly adapted for use in elongated and curved tips with extenders. The detailed structure of the aspiration tubular connector and the irrigation connector is also shown.

    • A compact and economical circuit for a multitone horn employing a microcomputer. The system also includes an audio amplifier, a speaker, a power supply, and start control means. The start control means includes a common lead and a plurality of star leads. Connecting the common lead to a predetermined one of the start leads will initiate a predetermined one of the plurality of available tones. A selected one of the start leads may have priority to terminate any pre-existing signal and initiate an alternate signal. At least one of the start leads, including the priority start lead, may be coupled to programming means whereby the signal activated may be preprogrammed to be any selected one of the plurality of available signals. The power supply includes a pulse generator for resetting the microcomputer in response to initial application of power. The available tones include both percussive and non-percussive tones and the total number of available tones may be greater than the number of start leads.

    • A cutting device for tissue separation includes a cutting edge using electrical energy such as RF power that is coupled to, but thermally insulated from, a catheter in an elongated medical device. Thermal insulation between a ring-type cutting device and the catheter is provided by a gap, slots within the ring, and/or slanted slots within the ring. In one embodiment, tissue separation occurs by rotation of a ring-type electrically-powered cutting edge having internal cross-bar elements. In an alternate embodiment, tissue separation occurs by longitudinal movement of an offset electrically-powered cutting edge that is pressed against tissue by an inflatable balloon. In a further alternate embodiment, a cutting edge is coupled longitudinally to a catheter, is provided electrical energy by wired connection to the braided catheter, but is thermally isolated from the catheter.
