    • A cellular system (100) includes network equipment (102, 104) and user equipment (106). The network equipment can operate to inspect incoming messages from user equipment to identify service applications and direct incoming messages using the domain specified by the user equipment. User equipment can operate to construct messages for communication to a base station, which messages specify one of the circuit switch service domain (206) and the packet switch service domain (204) for the service and transmitting the constructed message to the base. According to one aspect of the system, the network equipment can transmit application and service information to the user equipment, responsive to which the user equipment can select the preferred domain for a message or session.

    • The need for enabling content providers to authenticate those given access to certain content is addressed by embodiments of the present invention. When a content delivery server (110) receives a request from user equipment (UE) (101) to subscribe to a content delivery session, the content delivery server determines whether content provider authentication is required. If it is, the content delivery server requests authentication by a content provider (120) for the UE for the session. After obtaining needed authentication parameters, the content provider indicates to the content delivery server an authentication result. The content delivery server then either denies the UE subscription request or proceeds with UE subscription based on the authentication result.

    • A method and apparatus in a communication system (300) directs a radio frequency communication from a first radio frequency channel in a first frequency band between a mobile user of a mobile station (310) and a land based network (301). The method includes determining in a base station subsystem (350) allowability of the mobile user to operate in the second frequency band, and assigning the second radio frequency channel in the second frequency band to mobile station (310) when according to the determining step the mobile user is allowed to operate in the second radio frequency band. The determining step is based on an association of a mobile user of mobile station (310) with at least one of a plurality of cells in communication system (300), or a priority information element, or a subscriber identity. The second frequency band is a preferred frequency band which may be a predetermined preferred frequency band, or based on a congestion condition in communication system (300).
