    • An image forming apparatus includes an image bearing member to form a toner image thereupon. A transfer device is positioned adjacent to the image bearing member to transfer the toner image formed on a surface of the image bearing member onto a surface of a recording medium. A cleaning device cleans the surface of the image bearing member by removing remaining toner on the surface of the image bearing member after the toner image has been transferred onto the recording medium. A fixing device is provided in an upper part of the image forming apparatus to fix the toner image transferred onto the surface of the recording medium when the recording medium passes through the fixing device. An open/close member is rotatably supported by a main body of the image forming apparatus and opens and closes a recording medium conveying path between the transfer device and the fixing device. And, a shutter is movably supported to move between a protecting position to cover a part of the surface of the image bearing member facing the outside of the image forming apparatus when the open/close member is opened and a retreating position to open the part of the surface of the image bearing member when the open/close member is closed. The retreating position of the shutter is set in a space between the image bearing member and the fixing device and the shutter is movably supported by the main body of the image forming apparatus such that the shutter moves with a first face of the shutter continuously facing the image bearing member when the shutter moves between the protecting position and the retreating position.

    • An image bearing member utilized in an image forming apparatus includes a cylindrical member on which an image is formed on a peripheral surface thereof. An image bearing member further includes a filling-up member which suppresses vibration of the cylindrical member by being inserted into an inner part of the cylindrical member, and an anaerobic adhesive which adheres and fixes an outer peripheral surface of the filling-up member to an inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical member by osmosing into a clearance formed between the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical member and the outer peripheral surface of the filling-up member. The anaerobic adhesive is placed inside of an end face of at least one side of the outer peripheral surface of the filling-up member, and an adhesion width is formed wherein the anaerobic adhesive is spread around an entire periphery of the outer peripheral surface of the filling-up member from an end face of the filling-up member. The adhesive can be hardened by use of ultraviolet rays or a lid. Furthermore, gas can be sealed in the inner part of the cylindrical member. A method for manufacturing an image bearing member for an image forming apparatus includes vertically positioning a filling-up member inside a cylindrical member, injecting an anaerobic adhesive between the filling-up member and the cylindrical member, and hardening the anaerobic adhesive after the anaerobic adhesive has osmosed into the clearance between the cylindrical member and the filling-up member.

    • The clean surfaces of rollers in contact with photoconductive element of an image forming apparatus are cleaned of toner and other contaminants by increasing pressure between the contact surfaces of the roller and the photoconductive element during non-sensitive phases of operation, so that toner and other contaminants are transferred from the rollers to the photoconductive element. Alternatively, the rotational speed of the rollers are decreased, increased or reversed during non-sensitive phases of operation to effect transfer of toner and other contaminants to the photoconductive element for removal by the development station and/or development station. The system and cleaning method, which is particularly useful for charging, transfer and discharging rollers, are applicable to image forming apparatus wherein accumulation of toner and other contaminants decreases the quality of reproduction, require troublesome maintenance, decrease the life of the rollers requiring replacement, and prevents a compact image forming apparatus.
