    • In a radio communication system, transmitter and receiver stations share information on a maximum number of bits communicated per symbol. The transmitter station encodes a signal with sufficient error correcting capabilities to create a codeword. The transmitter station allocates the bits from the codeword to each symbol, modulates the symbols using a modulation type which processes symbols each having a number of bits equal to or smaller than the maximum number of bits per symbol, and transmits the modulated symbols. The receiver station demodulates the symbols using a modulation type which processes a larger number of bits per symbol as the transmission path quality is higher from among modulation types which process symbols having a number of bits equal to or smaller than the maximum number of bits per symbol.

    • Adaptive modulation/demodulation method in a radio communication system is provided. A modulation multi-level number in a transmission device and a demodulation multi-level number in a reception device are judged independently from each other according to a propagation condition and communication is performed by controlling the likelihood when the multi-level numbers of the transmission side and the reception side are different. The reception device can perform operation by controlling likelihood information on lower bit of the multi-level modulation even when the modulation multi-level number and the demodulation multi-level number used at the transmission side are different. Moreover, the transmission device and the reception device independently decide the modulation multi-level number and the demodulation multi-level number, thereby following an instantaneous propagation fluctuation and improving the throughput.

    • The total amount of power for communications transmitted over channels susceptible to quality fluctuation is decreased to reduce interference with other communications and increase the system's overall capacity. When channel-encoded data is to be transmitted, the quality of a transmission channel is judged. The data is transmitted when the judged quality is higher than predefined. However, if the quality is lower than predefined, the data transmission to a wireless section is suppressed to avoid a signal transmission that cannot effectively be used at a receiving station, decrease the average transmission power, and reduce interference with other communications. Even if the channel quality is lower than predefined at the time of assigning a code word created by channel encoding, the same code word assignment operation as for a transmission portion is performed with respect to a no-transmission portion that a transmitting station does not send to a wireless section.
