SOLUTION: This glass member is made of a transparent glass or a lustrous transparent glass having a light scattering region or a delustered (ground glass- like) region on at least part of the surface and a region with the light scattering property lower than that of the light scattering region on the other portion. The information of the portion with the light scattering property lower than that of the light scattering region or the lustrous region or a delustered portion can be displayed in the light scattering region or the delustered region of the glass member. Even when information is written by laser radiation with such low energy that micro-cracks are rarely generated, for example, high-visibility information can be displayed by the contrast between the information portion and the peripheral portion.

    • PURPOSE: To enhance energy efficiency and to make a device compact by constituting the device of a spatial light modulation element, a polarization/ analyzation means and an amplitude dividing beam splitter for dividing an amplitude of write light. CONSTITUTION: An optical write type display device writes the write light having image information on the light receiving surface of the write light of the spatial light modulation element (SLM) 5 by the amplitude dividing beam splitter(BS) 6 arranged on the write light side as left/right inverted images with the same intensity and the same size. Then, the light from a light source for read-out is polarization separated into a P polarized light and an S polarized light by the polarizing beam splitter(PBS) 4 for both polarization type polarizer/ analyzer provided on a read-out light side, and the areas of the corresponding SLM 5 are irradiated by the P polarized light and the S polarized light, and by synthesis and analyzation of two reflected modulation light and an inversion action of left/right images, the read-out light source light is substantially utilized by nearly 100%. Thus, the display luminance of the device is improved, and the device is made compact, and energy is saved.

    • PURPOSE:To suppress degradation in degree of polarization as far as possible even under a thermal stress or dynamical external stress by decreasing the photoelastic constants of transparent substrates to substantially zero. CONSTITUTION:This polarizer is constituted by forming >=2 layers thin films varying in refractive index from each other on the surfaces of transparent substrates 7a, 7b and selects and emits light 4, 5 having specific vibration directions by utilizing the dependency of the reflectivity and transmittance of rays 3 at the boundary faces of the respective thin films on polarization. The photoelastic constants of the transparent substrates 7a, 7b are decreased to substantially zero. The term 'the photoelastic constants are substantially zero' refers to about a value at which the influence to be exerted on reading out light 9 by an optical path difference based on the optical anisotropy of the transparent substrates 7a, 7b is negligible. As an example, the photoelastic constants suffice if the value thereof is in a range from -0.1 to 0.1 [10 cm ]/Nl for light of a wavelength 500 to 650nm. The transparent substrates 7a, 7b have the substantial optical anisotropy and the optical path difference is substantially not generated in the light propagating in the transparent substrates 7a, 7b even if the thermal stress and dynamic external stress are generated in the transparent substrates 7a, 7b.
