    • Techniques for transmitting data with hybrid automatic retransmission (HARQ) and interference mitigation are described. In one design, a transmitter processes a packet of data in accordance with a rate and sends at least one transmission of the packet to a receiver with HARQ. In one design, the transmitter sends a trigger message to the receiver to trigger the receiver to send a request to reduce interference to interfering station(s). The transmitter may send a first transmission of the packet (i) after the trigger message, e.g., in consecutive frames of a single HARQ interlace, or (ii) along with the trigger message in the same frame. The number of transmissions to send for the packet may be dependent on whether the interfering station(s) reduce interference to the receiver. The packet transmission may terminate early if interference mitigation is successful or may terminate late if interference mitigation is unsuccessful.

    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate defining control channels and resource identifiers related thereto as well as constraints for utilizing the control channels. A minimum number of required control reports for a set of resource indices can be specified as a constraint to provide a mobile device flexibility with respect to transmitting the control reports over available resource indices. Additionally, or alternatively, a maximum number of control reports can be specified for transmitted over the resource indices to prevent control channel overload. Moreover, a constraint can specify an exact number of control channels to utilize in transmitting control reports. Other constraints are possible as well, such as limiting a control report payload or change in payload, limiting out-of-band control reports based on in-band reports transmitted, etc.

    • Techniques for efficiently sending data in a wireless communication system are described. Code division multiplexing (CDM) or orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) may be selected for each traffic segment, which may correspond to specific time frequency resources. An output waveform comprised of traffic and overhead segments may be generated. Each traffic segment may carry CDM data at a chip rate if CDM is selected or OFDM data if OFDM is selected. OFDM symbols may be generated at a sample rate that may be an integer ratio of the chip rate and may have a duration that may be determined based on the traffic segment duration. The output waveform may carry CDM data and/or OFDM data on subcarriers corresponding to at least one carrier in a spectral allocation and may further carry OFDM data on remaining usable subcarriers in the spectral allocation.

    • Signaling is efficiently sent on a configurable CDMA control segment. To send signaling, transmission parameters for the CDMA control segment for a serving sector are determined. These parameter may indicate the CDMA control segment size, the frames in which the CDMA control segment is sent, the signaling channels to be sent on the CDMA control segment, and so on. The enabled CDMA signaling channels for a terminal and the average transmission interval for each enabled CDMA signaling channel are determined. For each frame in which the CDMA control segment is sent, the signaling channels to be sent on the CDMA control segment in that frame are determined. The signaling for each signaling channel is processed (e.g., encoded, channelized, scaled, and scrambled). The processed signaling for all signaling channels is combined and mapped to a time-frequency region used for the CDMA control segment in the frame.
