    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide synthetic nucleic acid molecules having altered codon usage without introduction of inappropriate or unintended transcription regulatory sequence for expression in a particular host cell. SOLUTION: A synthetic nucleic acid molecule is provided which comprises at least 300 nucleotides of a coding region for a polypeptide, has a codon composition differing at more than 25% of the codons from a wild type nucleic acid sequence encoding a polypeptide, and has at least 3-fold fewer transcription regulatory sequences than the average number of sequence which would result if the differing codons were randomly selected, wherein the transcriptional regulatory sequence is selected from the group consisting of transcription factor binding sequences, intron splice sites, poly (A) addition sites and promoter sequences, and wherein the polypeptide encoded by the synthetic nucleic acid molecule has at least 85% of sequence identity to the polypeptide encoded by the wild type nucleic acid sequence.
