    • A method and apparatus for locating a desired record amongst a plurality of records in a telephone directory involves associating a frequency field with each of the records, the frequency field being operable to store a frequency metric. A characteristic field is also associated with each of the records, the characteristic field being operable to store a characteristic representation of at least one identifying characteristic of a rendering associated with the record. An input representation of a rendering purporting to identify the desired record is produced and the input representation is compared with the contents of the characteristic fields of at least some of the records and confidence metrics are assigned to the records respectively, each of the confidence metrics representing a respective probability that a respective record is the desired record. A determination is then made as to which of the records have the first and second highest confidence metrics. The frequency fields of the records having the first and second highest confidence metrics are then read and the record with the highest frequency metric is identified as the desired record. Instruction codes stored on a computer-readable memory medium may be used to configure a general purpose computer to effect the method.

The filter can be a bandpass filter or a bandstop filter, especially for reducing co-channel interference in different types of wireless communications systems.

    • System and method for optimally updating a neighbor set for use by a mobile unit during soft handoff of the mobile unit in a CDMA cellular telephone environment is disclosed. A two-step process is used to ensure that the individual neighbor sets of active set members are combined in a manner such that only pilots representing the more important sectors are included in the updated neighbor set and pilots representing the less important sectors are excluded therefrom. In the first step, active set members whose RTD is more than twice as great as an OWD threshold are eliminated from consideration. In the second step, the neighbor set of the mobile unit is updated using the sectors included in the individual neighbor sets of the active set members that were not excluded by the first step, wherein those sectors are included in the updated neighbor set according to the number of individual sets in which they are found and their priority within those sets. In an alternative embodiment, a combined carrier-to-interference ratio for each of the individual neighbor set members is also used in updating the neighbor set. In an alternative embodiment, the individual neighbor set of the active set member having the shortest RTD is used as the updated neighbor set.

    • A base station for a wireless communications system comprises two antennas (14, 26) spaced by a small distance (d) for receiving a signal from a mobile terminal, and two receivers (34, 36) coupled to the antennas for providing first and second received signals with a phase difference dependent upon a direction of the mobile terminal relative to the antennas. A nulling linear signal combiner (38-44) combines the received signals to determine the phase difference, and hence direction of the mobile terminal, using an adaptively adjusted complex weight Wk which is supplied via an arctangent function (50) to a d.c. tracking filter (50). The determined direction, and distance determined from signal strength information available in the base station, identify the location of the mobile terminal. The location is itself useful information, and can be monitored over time to determine velocity of the mobile terminal and/or can be used to identify candidate terminals for handoff from a macrocell to a microcell of the system.
