    • A printer server connectable to a plurality of printers includes a receiver for receiving print data from an external apparatus, a first discrimination unit for discriminating a representation by which the received print data is described, and a selection unit for selecting, from the plurality of printers, a printer to print an image corresponding to the received print data. A second discrimination unit of the printer server discriminates whether the selected printer is capable of processing print data in the discriminated representation. When the selected printer is not capable of processing print data in the discriminated representation, a controller of the printer sever converts the received print data into print data in another representation and transmits the print data in the other representation. The controller transmits print data in the discriminated representation when the selected printer is capable of processing print data in the discriminated representation. The apparatus also includes a status receiver for receiving, from the selected printer, status information indicating that transmitting print data has been printed normally. A status sending unit of the apparatus sends the status information to the external apparatus.

When the number of dots to be printed is within the number of dots in the original image, the dots are rearranged so as to correspond to the dot positions in the original image, while on the contrary, when the number of dots to be printed is increased or decreased, the number of dots is accordingly increased or decreased based on a table, in which the priority of dot arrangement is provided. For these reasons, it is possible to perform various image processes to meet the characteristics of a desired binary color printer even if the original image contains binary color data, thereby allowing a good color image suitable for the binary color printer to be produced.

    • When image data binarized by a density-preserving type multilevel-coding method is to be recovered to multilevel image data, the size of a scanning window which includes as a central pixel point a pixel point to be subjected to multilevel coding is varied and the sums of data values of the binarized image data contained in the scanning windows corresponding to individual window sizes are sequentially calculated in the order of window size. If the sum of the binarized image data value reaches a predetermined threshold for each scanning window size, this window size is determined as a scanning window size for multilevel coding, and multilevel coding is executed. With this process, an optimum window size is determined which is suitable for use in effecting multilevel-coding with high image quality. Since multilevel coding employing the optimum window size is performed, multilevel coding with high image quality and high resolution is enabled.
