    • An electrical discharge machining unit for machining a workpiece by applying a voltage to a working gap which is formed between an electrode and the tool has a direct-current power supply for delivering a working current and a current limiter which is connected in series with the direct-current power supply in order to limit the working current. A switching device is connected in series with the direct-current power supply as well as with the current limiter and can be operated in such a way that it makes a voltage available to the working gap and forms a direct-current pulse. A series circuit consisting of an inductance and a capacitor is connected in parallel with the working gap. The purpose of the series circuit is either to suppress the interruption in a direct-current-pulse current component which follows a capacitor-discharge current component, as a result of which a pulsed-current phenomenon is prevented from occurring, or to suppress the continuation of a direct-current-pulse current component, in particular of pulses, which follows a capacitor-discharge current component. Irrespective of whether the final machining is to have a mirror quality, values for the capacitance and inductance for the series circuit can be selected within specified ranges.
