摘要： When playing an AV Clip recorded on a BD-ROM, a judgment is made, for each elementary stream, which of a plurality of predetermined conditions the elementary stream satisfies. The plurality of predetermined conditions include (a) a condition that a playback apparatus has a capability of playing the elementary stream, (b) a language attribute of the elementary stream matches a language setting of the playback apparatus, and (c) a channel attribute of the elementary stream is surround sound and the playback apparatus has a surround output capability. The playback apparatus assigns a priority to each elementary stream based on which conditions the elementary stream satisfies, selects an elementary stream having a highest priority, and plays the selected elementary stream.

The MainPath information designates one of the AV clips as a Main Clip and defines a portion of the Main Clip as a primary playback section. The SubPath information designates another one of the AV clips as a SubClip and defines a portion of the SubClip as a secondary playback section that is to be played back in synchronism with the primary playback section. The BD-ROM stores, the one of the AV clips designated as the SubClip along with an EP_map. The EP_map shows a plurality of entry points on the SubClip in a one-to-one correspondence with entry times on the SubClip timeline.

摘要： In a playback device for playing back a moving image recorded on a recording medium while executing an application recorded on the recording medium, to improve the use efficiency of a memory bus when combining the moving image with an image relating to the application. Whether or not to combine a background image, which is used as a background of GUI graphics such as a menu or a moving picture used by the application, is determined depending on whether the moving image covers the entire background image. If the moving image covers the background image, there is no need to combine the background image with the moving image. In this case, a memory bus allocated to the reading of the background image can be used for, for example, writing the moving image read from the recording medium onto a memory. Hence the memory bus bandwidth can be effectively used.

The BD-ROM reproduction apparatus selects an audio stream to be reproduced in accordance with each combination of conditions that are satisfied by each audio stream. One of the conditions is that a channel attribute of an audio stream is surround and the reproduction apparatus is capable to output surround audio. If the audio stream to be reproduced conforms to an encoding method such as DTS-HD or DD/DD+ whose audio frames are composed of basic data and extended data, the judgment on whether the surround output is available is made by judging whether or not the reproduction apparatus has a capability to process the extended data.

摘要： A BD-ROM playback apparatus for selecting and playing back one among text subtitle streams together with a moving picture. PSR 48-61 store Decode Capability flags whose set values indicate, for each language, whether or not a decode capability is present. Procedure executing unit 20 judges whether each text subtitle stream can be displayed, by referring to each set value of flags. Stream selection unit 17 selects a text subtitle stream judged as being able to be decoded. Here, the decode capability for a language being present indicates presence of rendering capability for converting character codes of the language into bitmaps, and support capability for supporting properties of the language. The b16 to b23 in PSR 30 includes a permission flag indicating whether stream selection unit 17 is permitted to select an unsupported language for which rendering capability is present but not support capability.
