摘要： In a distributed environment several data processing systems are interconnected across a network system. A distributed services program installed on the systems in the network allows the processors to access data files distributed across the various nodes of the network without regard to the location of the data file in the network. The processing system accessing file, referred to as the client processing system, utilizes a client cache within its operating system to store the data file. Utilizing the client cache minimizes the number of reads and writes that must go over the network to the server processing system where the file physically resides. The system and method of this invention prevents a process in the client processing system from accessing data in the client cache that has been modified at another node in the network. The blocks of data in the client cache are tested for validity in the client processing system by using modification times as measured by the server processing system. If the cache data blocks are determined to be valid, the data blocks are determined to be invalid, the data blocks are discarded, and the file is accessed from the server processing system.

摘要： An impact printing system which is particularly suitable for word processing is provided with the capability of effecting mid-line pitch changes. The impact printer system which is particularly compatible with interactive display terminals in word processing system has means for receiving a selected one of a plurality of type or character font elements. The pitch of character font elements are different from each other. The printing system includes means for selectively impacting selected characters from selected fonts along lines in a document. The system further includes control apparatus for controlling and determining the selection of font elements to be used and in the case of printing with a particular font element, the characters to be printed in respective positions along the lines of the document to provide the desired document format. The control apparatus includes apparatus for controlling the printing with at least two different font elements having different pitch along a single line.

摘要： A document indexing method and apparatus facilitates access to sequentially stored documents in a word processing system. The invention uses random access memory in the word processor to build a page index when the sequential data stream is first processed. The page index is then available so that subsequent access to previously processed pages is faster than conventional sequential access. The page index has associated with it an offset index having pointers to the actual entries in the page index. If the page index proves too small to store a index entry for every single page of a document, the offset index is reorganized to point to every other entry in the page index. Reorganization effectively doubles the span of pages covered by the page index and may be repeated a plurality of times to allow a sequentially stored document of arbitrary length to be indexed by a fixed length page index.

摘要： A distrbuted services program installed on each of a plurality of data processing systems in a network allows the processors to access data files distrbuted across the various nodes of the network.To reduce the network traffic overhead when files at other nodes are accessed, and to preserve the file system semantics, i.e. the file integrity, the accessing of the various files are managed by file synchronization modes. A file is given a first synchronization mode if a file is open at only one node for either read or write access. A file is given a second synchronization mode if a file is opened for read only access at any node. A file is given a third synchronization mode if the file is open for read access in more than one node, and at least one node has the file open for write access.If a file is in either the first or second synchronization mode, the client node, which is the node accessing the file, uses a client cache within its operating system store the file. All read and writes are then sent to this cache.If a file is in the third mode, all read and write requests must go to the server node where the file resides. The node accessing the file does not use the cache in its operating system to access the file data during this third mode.

摘要： In order to avoid the problem of the last line of the body text not being justified when it is not the end of a paragraph but is followed by a footer, a converter/processor (13) is provided to modify the print data stream produced by another converter/processor (12) from the revisable or editable text data stream. If during conversion from the revisable data stream to the print data stream a "last body text line" is found and it is not the end of a paragraph, a latch (34) is set. Then, with each line of print data stream text, the latch is checked, and if the latch is set and the text line ends with a carriage return, the carriage return is replaced with a zero-index-carriage return and an index. These act similar to a carriage return in all cases except one--the text line which they terminate may now be justified.
