    • An apparatus is disclosed for automatically locking an obturator housing to a cannula housing of a trocar assembly when the obturator is advanced to a predetermined distal position. Two latch devices are mounted for pivotal movement within the obturator housing with each having at least one latch positioned at one end thereof. The pivoting latch devices are automatically pivoted into locked engagement with partial apertures or indentations in the cannula housing such that the obturator housing is secured to the cannula housing. Biasing springs are provided to automatically pivot the pivoting latch devices out of engagement with the cannula housing when the obturator is withdrawn to its proximal position.

    • A flexible medical instrument includes an elongate shaft, a jaw tip on the distal end of the elongate shaft and a handle on the proximal end. The elongate shaft includes a coil tube having a distal end fixedly attached to a portion of the jaw tip and a proximal end fixedly attached to a rigid structure at the proximal end of the instrument. The coil tube is disposed within an outer sheath that includes a tubular braid. The elongate shaft and jaw tip are axially rotatable relative to the handle for rotational positioning of the jaws. An actuation element is longitudinally moveable within the shaft to open and close the jaws. The sheath prevents or restricts expansion of the coil tube during pushing of the actuation element.

    • A peelable sheath is used to provide an atraumatic cover for an elongate medical device positionable through an incision. The peelable sheath includes a flexible tube, a pair of tabs on a proximal portion of the flexible tube, and a collar on a proximal portion of the flexible tube. The tabs extend laterally through at least one sidewall opening in the collar. The flexible tube is slidably disposed in a lumen of the collar. In use, the sheath is positioned covering at least a distal portion of the elongate medical device, and the elongate medical device is inserted into an incision or other opening in a patient. The sheath is withdrawn from the elongated medical device by pulling the tabs outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the flexible tube, causing at least a proximal portion of the flexible tube to split longitudinally into at least two longitudinal sections. The longitudinal sections move proximally through the at least one sidewall opening as the tabs are pulled.

    • An apparatus for facilitating fusion of adjacent vertebrae, In one preferred embodiment, the apparatus for facilitating fusion of adjacent vertebrae includes a retractor and a retractor introducer. The retractor includes a retractor sleeve having proximal and distal ends and defines a longitudinal passageway for reception of surgical instrumentation. The retractor sleeve has first and second retractor arms extending distally therefrom in a general longitudinal direction. Each retractor arm has first and second opposed supporting surfaces for engaging respective adjacent opposed vertebrae. Each retractor arm defines a dimension between the first and second supporting surfaces sufficient to distract the opposed vertebrae upon insertion thereof. The retractor introducer is positionable within the longitudinal passageway of the retractor sleeve. The retractor introducer includes an elongated member defining proximal and distal ends and having a distal introducer head. The introducer head has a retractor arm insert. The retractor arm insert preferably defines a cross-sectional dimension to substantially occupy the inner area defined by the retractor arms of the retractor and possesses sufficient rigidity to advance within the tissue portions thereby facilitating placement of the first and second retractor arms of the retractor between the vertebral portions in distracting engagement therewith. The introducer head of the retractor introducer may also define a proximal portion which has a cross-sectional dimension generally corresponding to the internal dimension of the retractor sleeve to thereby substantially minimize entry of tissue within the retractor sleeve during placement between the opposed vertebrae. Preferably, the cross-sectional dimension of the proximal portion of the introducer head is slightly less than the internal dimension of the retractor sleeve.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for endoscopic application of surgical staples adapted to attach surgical mesh to body tissue in laparoscopic hernia surgery. The apparatus includes a frame, and a generally elongated endoscopic section connected to the frame and extending distally therefrom. A staple storage magazine is provided for storing a plurality of surgical staples at the distal end portion of the endoscopic section with each staple being configured and adapted to attach the mesh to the body tissue. An elongated pusher system formed of several assembled components and extending from the frame to the endoscopic section is provided for individually advancing at least one staple at a time distally for positioning adjacent the surgical mesh and the body tissue. The pusher system also includes a trigger mecanism to actuate the pusher. Anvil means provides for closing the staple to encompass at least a portion of the surgical mesh and to penetrate the body tissue in a manner to attach the portion of the mesh to the body tissue. The invention also relates to a system for attaching surgical mesh to body tissue, a method for endoscopically attaching surgical mesh to body tissue. The staple for endoscopically attaching the surgical mesh to body tissue and a kit for accomplishing such attachment.
