    • The present invention enables a liquid crystal display device using LEDs as a light source to reduce uneven brightness, increase efficiency of heat discharged from the LEDs, and provide area brightness control. The liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel and a backlight. The backlight includes a light guide panel and a plurality of LEDs arranged on a line. The light guide panel includes a concave portion extending in a longitudinal direction of the light guide panel. A large number of LEDs are placed in the concave portion of the light guide panel. The plurality of LEDs arranged on a line emit light alternately in opposite directions. This configuration allows for uniform brightness distribution without forming a large number of concave portions in the light guide panel. Further, this configuration also allows for area brightness control by controlling a large number of LEDs by group.

    • A backlight unit, being thin-sized, but having high definition and high uniformity of luminance, and a video display apparatus applying the same therein, has a plural number of sets of at least one or more of light source(s) (1) and a light guidance plate (2) for guiding lights from the light source(s) to a side of a liquid crystal panel, to be emitted therefrom, wherein the light source(s) is/are disposed on one end side of the light guidance plate, and other set of light source is disposed on a rear surface side of the other end of the light guidance plate opposite to the one end. A gap or groove (4) is formed mutually between each of the light guidance plates in the plural number of sets, and if assuming that width of the gap or groove is “d”, distance between a light incident surface of the liquid crystal panel and a light emission surface of the light guidance plate, or distance between a light incident surface of an optical member disposed between the liquid crystal panel and the light guidance plate and a light emission surface of the light guidance plate is “h”, and further 2.0 mm>d≧0.1 mm and 10.0 mm>h≧0.4 mm, then the following condition is satisfied: 4≦h/d≦100.

    • A plasma display device performing display control by utilizing plasma discharge includes a panel having a plurality of address electrodes and a plurality of display electrodes disposed to intersect with the address electrodes, and a drive circuit performing address discharge drive for selectively producing a discharge in cells between the address electrodes and the display electrodes, and display discharge drive for applying to the display electrode a display drive pulse having a voltage increasing with such a gradient as to continuously produce a discharge current in the selected cell. In the display discharge drive performed after the address discharge drive, a display drive pulse with an increasing voltage of gentle gradient is applied to the display electrode, thereby producing faint discharges continuously in the selected cell during the increase of the voltage applied to the display electrode. Display luminance is controlled by the above ramp-wave discharge. In such the ramp-wave discharge, differently from the conventional strong discharge, faint discharges are produced a plurality of times while the display drive pulse is being applied, enabling improvement on the discharge efficiency, and reduction of power consumption.
