    • An object of this invention is to suppress a decrease in reading efficiency while preventing image degradation. To achieve this object, an image reading apparatus includes a light source which illuminates an object, a sensor which photoelectrically converts light reflected by the object and reads information on the object, a first density reference member which serves as a reference for correcting an image signal obtained by reading an original by the sensor, a second density reference member which is different from the first density reference member, a comparison unit which compares the second signal obtained by reading the second density reference member by the sensor and the third signal obtained by reading again the second density reference member by the sensor, and a correction unit which corrects the image signal on the basis of the first signal obtained by reading the first density reference member by the sensor, and the comparison result of the comparison device.

    • A color image-scanning device has a fixed scan mode and a flow scan mode. In the fixed scan mode, a document is scanned while maintaining the document at a fixed location on a platen glass. In the flow scan mode, a document is fed from an automatic document feeder and is scanned while moving the document. In each of these modes, images are scanned in a main scanning direction and a sub scanning direction. Color registration errors in the main and sub scanning direction caused by an optical factor are corrected in accordance with correction values stored in a memory. Respective correction values for each of the main and sub scanning directions are acquired by scanning a test chart in each of the fixed-scan mode and the flow-scan mode and stored in the memory. Proper correction values are read from the memory depending on the scanning mode selected, and color registration errors are corrected in accordance with the read correction value.

    • The deterioration of read-image quality caused by LED color-tone variations is suppressed in a case in which a white-color LED illumination module is used as a light source of a color-image reading apparatus. The color-image reading apparatus includes an illumination module formed of a plurality of white-color LEDs arranged in a main-scanning direction; an image sensor such as a CCD; a unit for moving the original and the image sensor relatively in a sub-scanning direction; and an input masking unit. The illumination module is formed of LEDs having the same color-tone rank. The color-image reading apparatus also includes a setting unit for setting a color-tone rank for the illumination module, and a control unit, such as a CPU, for switching a parameter of the input masking unit according to the color-tone rank.
