    • An ion source apparatus comprising a bulk type thermionic cathode, which, when heated, emits thermoelectrons; an anode for causing a gas discharge in cooperation with the cathode thereby producing plasma; a grid electrode for extracting ions out of the plasma; a magnetic member for confining the plasma within a prescribed region; and a ferromagnetic body which surrounds the thermionic cathode. The ferromagnetic body removes the lines of magnetic force produced by magnets from the neighborhood of the surface of the thermionic cathode. As a result, thermoelectrons are freely emitted from the thermionic cathode, thereby ensuring a stable gas discharge.

    • A beam direct converter recovers the energy of incoming ion particles intermingled with neutral particles. An angular cylindrical collector of the direct converter has its lengthwise side substantially aligned with the flowing direction of a beam of neutral particles. Angular cylindrical suppressors are provided upstream and downstream of the collector as viewed from the flowing direction of the beam of neutral particles. The collector is set at a positive potential to decelerate ion particles taken into the collector. Suppressors set at a negative potential prevent electrons produced outside of the direct converter from being carried into the collector. A plurality of conductive pipes are embedded in the suppressor. When the conductive pipes are supplied with current running in the same direction, a magnetic field acting in parallel with the plane of the suppressor envelops it. When, therefore, ion particles enter the suppressor with the emission of secondary electrons, it is possible to confine the secondary electrons in the magnetic field, thereby preventing them from being carried into the collector.

    • This process for the desulfurization and denitration of light oil is effected by extraction with an organic solvent containing nitrogen. The invention also relates to light oil desulfurized and denitrated by said process as well as an organic solvent containing nitrogen for the extraction. The solvent is selected from among, for example, hetrocyclic compounds containing nitrogen, such as pyrrolidones, imidazolidinones, pyrimidinones and pyridinium salts, and acid amides. The combination of the process of this invention with any ordinary process for hydrodesulfurization enables the production of light oil having a sulfur content not exceeding 0.01% by weight. Light oil still containing benzothiophenone and dibenzothiophenone derivatives after hydrodesulfurization can be easily desulfurized to yield a desulfurized product not having any undesirable color, or any offensive smell. Also, the extraction of nitrogen compounds and aromatic compound from light oil is effected by the same process. As the re-extraction of sulfur compounds from the extracted phase or the separation of the extracted phase into the solvent and the extracted oil can be easily carried out, the solvent is reusable. The light oil treated according to the process of this invention enables a reduction of particulates in the combustion product thereof, and has a high cetane index.
