    • A switchable autostereoscopic display device comprises a display panel having an array of display pixels for producing a display, the display pixels being arranged in rows and columns, and a lens arrangement for directing the output from different pixels to different spatial positions to enable a stereoscopic image to be viewed, the lens arrangement being in a plane parallel to the display panel. The lens arrangement comprises an electrically switchable LC layer which defines a lens pattern or a lens replica pattern, wherein the LC alignment of the LC layer is electrically switchable such that the lens arrangement is switchable between a 2D mode and a 3D mode. In the 2D mode, the LC alignment is in a first direction substantially within the plane of the lens arrangement, and in the 3D mode the LC alignment is in a second, perpendicular direction also substantially within the plane of the lens arrangement. The light output of the display panel is polarized in the second direction. This arrangement enables a perpendicular relationship between the output of the display panel and the LC alignment direction to be maintained for two perpendicular viewing planes.

    • The invention relates to an illumination system (30) for illuminating a display (20) of a display device (10), and to a display device. The illumination system comprises a light source (S1, S2, S3) and an optical control layer (40). The light source emits light via the optical control layer to the display for illuminating a predefined area (A1, A2, A3) on the display. The light is emitted from the light source in a diverging beam in a particular direction (O1, O2, O3) towards the predefined area. The optical control layer comprises an arrangement of portions (46) having a refractive index which is different from the optical control layer. The portions are arranged to reflect a part of the diverging light towards the predefined area. The measures according to the invention have the effect that the arrangement of portions in the optical control layer confines both the light emitted by the light source and the backscattered light reflected back to the light source to substantially within the predefined area.

    • A multi-view display is switchable between single view and multi-view modes, and uses lenticular means (9) arranged over the display panel which comprise birefringent electro-optic material (62) adjacent a non-switchable optically transparent layer (60).
