    • Systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with signal detection with an adjustable number of interfering signals. According to one embodiment an apparatus includes an interferer counter, a detection method selector, and a signal detector. The interferer counter is configured to identify a number of active interfering signals in a received signal. The detection method selector is configured to select a signal detection method based, at least in part, on the number of active interfering signals identified by the interferer counter. The signal detector is configured to process the received signal according to the signal detection method selected by the detection method selector to detect an intended signal in the received signal.

    • Systems and methods are provided for computing a relative path delay between multiple transmitting source to select a source that is closest to a receiving device. Preamble sequences unique to each source are received by a receiving device. The receiving devices determines based on a channel estimation or differential algorithm which transmitting source is closer to the receiving device. The channel estimation algorithm computes the path delay based on a channel estimation correlation at different preamble sequence indices. The differential algorithm computes the path delay based on a correlation between the received and transmitted preamble sequences at different preamble sequence indices. The receiving device selects the closer of the multiple sources to be the source from which to extract data.

    • A received signal includes a plurality of user signals, the plurality of user signals including at least a first user signal and a second user signal. The first user signal corresponds to first user data that has been modulated independently of second user data corresponding to the second user signal. At least one of the first user signal or the second user signal is encoded with a finite state machine encoder independently of the other of the first user signal and the second user signal. The received signal is demodulated, wherein demodulating the received signal includes calculating distances between (i) each transmit symbol in the received signal and (ii) expected symbol values, wherein each expected symbol value corresponds to user data for multiple users including the first user and the second user. User data in the received signal including the first user data and the second user data is decoded based on the calculated distances.
