    • An optical pickup includes a variable iris having a numerical aperture is adjusted according to wavelength of light and can be compatibly used for discs having respectively different specifications. The optical pickup includes a plurality of laser sources respectively emitting light of different wavelengths, an objective lens for focusing the light emitted from the laser sources into an optical spot optimized to each information recording surface of the plurality of discs, at least one photo detector for detecting the light reflected from the information recording surfaces of the corresponding discs where the optical spot is focused and passed through the objective lens, an optical element for adjusting an optical path so that the light emitted from the laser sources is directed toward the objective lens and the light emitted from the objective lens is directed toward the at least one photo detector, and a variable iris coupled between the laser sources and the objective lens, selectively operating according to the wavelength. The optical pickup can be compatibly used for discs having respectively different specifications irrespective of the thicknesses of the discs. The variable iris selectively operates in the case that light of two or more wavelengths is used, to thereby provide an effect of accomplishing an optimal optical spot on the discs.

    • An optical pickup apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention, comprises an optical unit for projecting a plurality of wavelengths of light, the light including a celadon light, toward a recording medium and receiving the light reflected from the recording medium to thereby detect an information signal and an error signal, and a compatible objective lens for focusing a light projected from the optical unit to thereby form an optical spot on a recording surface of the recording medium and applying at least three light having different wavelength ranges to be compatibly used for both the high-density and the low-density recording mediums. Accordingly, the optical pickup apparatus is capable of compatibly employing a high-density recording medium, which uses a celadon light and is slimmer than a digital versatile disc (DVD), and at least one low-density recording medium.

    • An optical pickup compatible with at least two types of optical recording media using light beams having respectively different wavelengths for recording and reproducing information. In the optical pickup, a first laser light source emits a light beam having a relatively shorter wavelength. A first photodetector detects a reflected light beam with respect to the relatively shorter wavelength. An objective lens forms an annular shielding region between a near axis region of a relatively smaller radius and a far axis region of a relatively larger radius. A laser unit emits a light beam having a relatively longer wavelength, and detects only a light beam passing though the near axis region in the objective lens among reflected light beams having the relatively longer wavelength. A plurality of beam splitters directs the light beams emitted from the first laser light source and the laser unit to the objective lens, and directs the light beam reflected from each of the optical recording media to a corresponding one of the first photodetector and the laser unit. The optical pickup of the present invention has compatibility with respect to disks regardless of the thicknesses and various aspects of the disks, and can detect a good signal. Also, the optical pickup is manufactured and mass-produced at a low cost.
