    • PURPOSE:To facilitate varying a displacement arbitrarily with a constant applied voltage and giving the displacement free from hysteresis by a method wherein the number of piezoelectric porcelain layers to which the voltage is applied is arbitrarily determined by switching means. CONSTITUTION:Switches are connected to piezoelectric porcelain layers in such a manner that the number of the piezoelectric porcelain layers to which a voltage is applied is successively doubled in the order of switches when the respective switches are closed. If some of the switches 3 are closed, the voltage is successively applied to the piezoelectric porcelain layers whose number corresponds to the respective switches. As only the piezoelectric porcelain layers to which the voltage is applied create displacements, an arbitrary total displacement corresponding to the number of layers can be obtained by selecting the switches. For instance, if the switch 3a only is closed, one piezoelectric porcelain layer 1 creates the displacement. If the switches 3a and 3b are closed, three piezoelectric porcelain layers created the displacements. If the switches 3b and 3d are closed, ten piezoelectric porcelain layers create the displacement. Thus, by selecting the number of layers to which the voltage is applied, the total displacement can be determined. Although the number of the piezoelectric porcelain layers to be driven is determined by the manual switches in this case, the switches may be semiconductor switches and automatic digital control may be employed by using a numerical controller.

    • PURPOSE:To improve machining speed by integrally forming a vibration converting element and amplitude enlarging means to increase the rigidity of ultrasonic vibrating means and reduce the size thereof and to apply vibrating motion to a vibrating tool. CONSTITUTION:When a piezoelectric element PZT 2 is urged by natural frequency which an ultrasonic vibrator 15 has, expansible ultrasonic vibration is started round the vicinity of a node. As upper and lower flanges 20, 21 are vibrated with ultrasonic vibration frequency, coefficient of friction is remarkably lowered so that the flanges are operated very smoothly against air pressure of air feed and discharge ports 13, 18. Since a cylinder is supported at two places of the flanges 20, 21, if the cylinder is firmly fixed, high transverse rigidity can be obtained. Secondly, when machining pressure is applied to change the relative position of the cylinder and the piston, a position sensor is operated to automatically control a flow valve at an air pressure feed and discharge port 18 or at an air pressure feed and discharge port 13, whereby the relative position can be kept at a fixed value while machining pressure being retained.

    • PURPOSE:To easily accomplish engagement with a very small gap or negative gap by applying continuous ultrasonic vibration to one or both of substances engaging with each other until they reach a certain depth of engagement, and then applying intermittent ultrasonic vibration to them to be engaged with each other. CONSTITUTION:An insertion pin 42 is installed on a cross head, and inserted and engaged therewith by pressing force produced by a lowering the pin 42 to a hole part 43. In this case, ultrasonic vibration is transmitted to the pin 42 at the forward end of a honing head, so that while vibration is transmitted to the hole part 43, insertion of the pin 42 is proceeded. The pin 42 is vibrated with a frequency composed of resonance frequency of an ultrasonic vibrator and natural frequency of a vibrated body. The vibrating pin 42 has the maximum amplitude at the forward end portion, frictional force is remarkably reduced at a contacting surface between the pin and a counterpart so that the contacting surface is smooth. On the other hand, vibration for repeatedly causing the pin 42 to the expanded and indented in the radial direction is also generated, so that the pin can be easily fitted therein with small insertion hole by temporary action of expanding a clearance in the engagement state.
