    • An exemplary method for providing an optimized digital image comprises obtaining digital image data by a digital image capture device, based on the digital image data, automatically determining at least two setting types, and a plurality of setting values therefor, for capturing a plurality of digital images, automatically capturing the plurality of digital images using the digital image capture device, each image being captured with at least one setting value different than another image, and providing an optimized digital image based on the plurality of digital images. In one exemplary embodiment, the optimized image is selected from the plurality of digital images. In another exemplary embodiment, the optimized image is synthesized based on the plurality of digital images.

    • Systems and methods for extracting a graphical bar code (i.e., an image that contains inconspicuous graphical modulations that encode embedded information) from an input image are described. In one aspect, estimates of position coordinates for a detected graphical bar code candidate are computed. An objective function is optimized based on the computed position coordinates to obtain final position coordinate estimates for the graphical bar code candidate. Non-graphical bar code regions are trimmed from the input image based on the final position coordinates for the graphical bar code candidate to produce a trimmed graphical bar code candidate for decoding.

    • Methods, systems, and machine readable media storing machine-readable instructions for enhanced classification of marginal instances are described. In one aspect, a classification system includes a cascade of forward classification stages and a marginal instance classifier. Each of the forward classification stages is configured to classify an instance into one of a rejected class, an unconditionally accepted class, and a conditionally accepted class. The cascade is configured to reject each instance classified into the rejected class by at least one of the forward classification stages, accept each instance classified into the unconditionally accepted class by all of the forward classification stages, and conditionally accept each instance classified into the conditionally accepted class by at least one of the forward classification stages. The marginal instance classifier is configured to classify each instance conditionally accepted by the cascade into one of a rejected class and an accepted class.

    • Systems and methods of assessing image quality are described. In one scheme for assessing image quality, a target object region is detected in an input image. An image quality feature vector representing the target object region in an image quality feature space is generated. The image quality feature vector is mapped to a measure of image quality. In one scheme for generating an image quality assessment engine, target object regions are detected in multiple input images. Image quality feature vectors representing the target object regions in an image quality feature space are generated. The image quality feature vectors are correlated with respective measures of image quality assigned to the input images. A mapping between image quality feature vectors and assigned measures of image quality is computed.
