摘要： A liquid crystalline compound exhibiting a large .DELTA..epsilon. value, an electrical and chemical stability and a superior compatibility with existing liquid crystalline compounds, a liquid crystal composition containing the same, and a liquid crystal display element constructed by using the composition are provided, which liquid crystalline compound is expressed by the formula (I), F--(CH.sub.2)n-E--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.k --G--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.l --L--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.m --Z--Q--Y (I) wherein n is an integer of 1 to 10; k, l and m each independently are an integer of 0 to 2; ring E is 1,4-cyclohexylene group or 1,4-phenylene group, wherein one or more H atoms on each six-membered ring may be replaced by F atom(s); G and L each independently is a covalent bond or 1,4-cyclohexylene group or 1,4-phenylene group, wherein one or more H atoms on each six-membered ring may be replaced by F atom(s); Q is covalent bond or --O--; Y is a fluoroalkyl group of 1 to 3C or F atom; but in the case where ring E is 1,4-cyclohexylene group and at least one of G and L is covalent bond, k+l+m.noteq.0, and in the case where Q is --O--, Y is not F atom.

The liquid crystalline compounds are terphenyl derivatives represented by general formula (1): wherein R represents a straight or branched alkyl group of 1-20 carbon atoms, and any methylene groups (—CH2—) not adjacent each other in each alkyl group may be replaced by oxygen atoms; X is a halogen atom, —OCF3, —OCF2H, —CF3, —CF2H or —CFH2; Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 independently represents H or F, but at least two of Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 represent F; and any atom constituting these compounds may be substituted by its isotope.

摘要： The present invention provides a liquid crystalline compound having a difluoropropyleneoxy group as a bonding group, which is represented by Formula (1): wherein R1 and R2 each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, a cyano group or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; rings A1 to A5 each independently represent a 1,4-cyclohexylene group, a 1,4-cyclohexenylene group or a 1,4-phenylene group; Z1 to Z4 each independently represent a single bond, —CH2CH2—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —COO—, —OCO—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —CF2O— or —OCF2—; Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 each independently represent hydrogen or fluorine; and k, l, m and n each independently represent 0 or 1. This liquid crystalline compound has a large absolute value (|&Dgr;&egr;|) of a dielectric anisotropy and shows a relatively small refractive anisotropy. The present invention further provides a liquid crystal composition comprising this compound which makes it possible to drive display elements of various modes at a low voltage, and a liquid crystal display element containing this liquid crystal composition.

摘要： The invention is to provide liquid crystalline compounds which have a low viscosity, high negative dielectric anisotropy, high resistivity, and high voltage holding ratio, and are stable against heat and ultraviolet light; to provide liquid crystal compositions comprising the liquid crystalline compound; and to provide liquid crystal display devices using the liquid crystal composition therein; the liquid crystalline compound is expressed by the general formula (1) wherein R1 and Y1 represent an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; X1, X2, and X3 independently represent single bond, 1,2-ethylene group, vinylene group, —COO—, —CF2O—, or —OCF2—; ring A1, ring A2, ring A3, and ring A4 independently represent trans-1,4-cycloliexylene, or 1,4-phenylene hydrogen atom on the ring may be replaced by fluorine atom or chlorine atom provided that at least one of ring A2, ring A3, and ring A4 represents 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene; m and n are 0 or 1, and each element which constitutes this compound may be replaced by its isotope.

摘要： Disclosed are (a) liquid crystalline compounds which are essential as component of the liquid crystal compositions, are excellent in miscibility with other liquid crystal compositions, particularly in the miscibility at low temperatures, and expressed by the general formula (1) wherein R0 and R1 independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; ring A0, ring A1, ring A2, and ring A3 represent 1,4-cyclohexylene group, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl group, 1,4-phenylene group in which one or more hydrogen atoms on the ring may be represented by a halogen atom or R2O group, pyridine-2,5-diyl group, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl group; Z0, Z1, Z2, and Z3 represent —CH2CH2—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —CF2O—, —OCF2—, —COO—, —OCO—, —(CH2)4—, or single bond; Q1 and Q2 represent hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; Q3 represents hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or R2O group; R2 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; Y represents a halogen atom, cyano group, or an alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; l, m, n and o are 0, 1, or 2 with the proviso that 1≦l+m+n+o≦3; and the atom which constitutes this compound may be replaced by its isotope; and (b) liquid crystal display devices fabricated by using the liquid crystal composition.
