    • A reciprocating piston compressor adapted to receive a low pressure gas from an external circuit, and to supply a high pressure gas to the external circuit includes a cylinder block with front and rear ends. The cylinder block includes a central bore extending along the longitudinal axis, and a plurality of axially extending cylinder bores. The central bore has an open end at the front end of the cylinder block and an opposite closed end. Pistons are slidably provided within the cylinder bores for reciprocation. A drive shaft is inserted into the central bore for driving the motion of the reciprocating pistons. A pair of radial bearings, which are provided in the central bore, supports the axially extending drive shaft. An oil separator is provided between the compressor and the external circuit to remove lubricating oil contained in the high pressure gas. An oil reservoir is provided for accumulating the lubricating oil removed from the high pressure gas by the oil separator, the cylinder block including at least a portion of the oil reservoir adjacent to the blind end of the central bore.

    • An improvement of a piston type compressor is disclosed. The compressor has a cylinder block that includes a plurality of cylinder bores and a plurality of suction passages. Each of the suction passages extends through the cylinder block to connect a crank chamber with a suction chamber. The suction chamber is connected with the cylinder bores via a plurality of suction ports located in association with the cylinder bores. Each cylinder bore accommodating a piston that moves therein to circulate gas between the compressor and an external gas circuit. The gas introduced into the crank chamber from the external gas circuit is supplied to the suction chamber through each suction passage and is supplied from the suction chamber to each cylinder bore through an associated suction port. The suction passages are smaller in number than the cylinder bores. The suction ports are disposed in the vicinity of an opening of the suction passages.

    • A multi-piston swash plate type compressor for an air-conditioning system used in a vehicle such as an automobile, including a cylinder block body having a swash plate chamber formed therein for receiving a swash plate and cylinder bores formed therein for receiving pistons which are reciprocated by rotation of the swash plate. The compressor has a suction chamber which is fed with a refrigerant including lubricating oil from an evaporator of the air-conditioning system and a discharge chamber which feeds the compressed refrigerant to a condenser of the air-conditioning system. When the compressed refrigerant is discharged from the cylinder bore into the discharge chamber through a discharge reed valve, all of the discharged refrigerant is impinged on the peripheral and inner wall so as to separate the lubricating oil from the refrigerant, whereby an effective damping and sealing oil layer is formed between the discharge reed valve and the valve seat thereof.

    • A compressor has an odd number of aligned pairs of cylinder bores. A double-headed piston is accommodated in each aligned pair of bores. The time at which gas is discharged from each cylinder bore is different from that of all of the other cylinder bores. The compressor has a pair of reducing devices, one reducing the pulsation amplitude of the gas discharged from the front cylinder bores and the other reducing the pulsation amplitude of the gas discharged from the rear cylinder bores. The reducing devices reduce the gas pulsation amplitudes of the front and rear cylinder bores at a substantially equal rate. Each reducing device includes a discharge chamber for receiving the gas discharged from the associated cylinder bores and a discharge passage connected to the discharge chamber. The discharge chambers of the reducing devices have equal volumes, and the discharge passages of the reducing devices have equal lengths and equal cross-sectional areas. This structure improves the vibration characteristics of the compressor and thus reduces noise.
