    • The wrappers of filter cigarettes are tested during transport in the peripheral flutes of a drum-shaped conveyor through a testing station where at least one end of the wrapper receives air at a previously stabilized pressure. The stabilized pressure is monitored by an electropneumatic transducer which further monitors the pressure differential between the interior and the exterior of the wrapper at the testing station and transmits appropriate signals to a computer which generates test signals by forming a quotient from the signals denoting the pressure differential and the signals denoting the stabilized pressure. The computer can further process and evaluate signals denoting a selected reference pressure as well as the pressure of air which is used to reduce the likelihood of leakage of air from the interior of the wrapper at the testing station.

    • The wrappers of filter cigarettes wherein wrapper portions surrounding the filter mouthpieces have holes for admission of atmospheric air into the column of tobacco smoke are tested during sidewise movement at the periphery of a rotary drum. A first testing device establishes a first pressure differential between the interior and exterior of successive wrappers, and a second testing device establishes a second pressure differential between the interior and exterior of those wrapper portions which surround tobacco as well as a different third pressure differential between those wrapper portions which surround the filter material. An evaluating circuit has two electropneumatic transducers which furnish first and second signals respectively denoting the pressure differential between the interior and exterior of successive wrappers and the pressure differential between the interior and exterior of successive wrapper portions which surround tobacco. A subtracting circuit furnishes third signals which denote the difference between the first and second signals. The first and third signals are compared with reference signals which respectively denote maximum permissible permeability of wrappers and minimum acceptable permeability of successive wrapper portions surrounding the filter material. Cigarettes wherein the permeability of wrappers is outside of the range between the maximum permissible and minimum acceptable permeability are segregated from acceptable cigarettes.

    • Apparatus for making one or more rod-like fillers of shredded tobacco for use in the making of cigarettes or the like employs one or two pneumatic conveyors having endless foraminous belts trained over pulleys and including elongated stretches below communicating parts of a common suction chamber. A shower of intermixed tobacco shreds and smaller particles including tobacco dust and coarser particles is directed against the undersides of the elongated stretches. The shreds are attracted to and advance with the respective belts to form streams which are ready to be trimmed and thereupon draped into cigarette paper or the like. At least some smaller particles penetrate through the respective belts into the corresponding parts of the suction chamber. The contents of the suction chamber are evacuated by suction and are returned to the undersides of the elongated stretches of the belts for classification.

    • The tobacco stream which is formed at the underside of a foraminous conveyor and carries a surplus of tobacco particles is transported past a trimming device which removes the surplus to convert the stream into a filler which is thereupon wrapped into a web of cigarette paper. The mass flow of tobacco particles in the untrimmed stream is monitored by a detector which utilizes infrared light, and the signals from such detector are used to change the position of the conveyor relative to the trimming device so as to ensure that the mass flow of tobacco particles in the filler remains within a desired range. One or more additional detectors monitor the mass of flow tobacco particles in the filler upstream and/or downstream of the wrapping station, and the signals from such second detector or detectors are used to correct the position of the conveyor relative to the trimming device and/or to change the position of the trimming device relative to the conveyor.

    • The diameter of a continuous filter rod is monitored in a tubular nozzle through which successive increments of the rod are conveyed axially and which directs against the external surface of the tubular envelope of the rod a narrow annular stream of compressed air at a pressure which does not result in deformation of the envelope. The thus admitted air is permitted to escape into the atmosphere only by way of two narrow passages which flank the region of contact between the air stream and the envelope. A flow meter indirectly monitors the rate of flow of air through such passages and generates signals which are indicative of the diameters of successive increments of the envelope. The pressure of the air stream which impinges upon the envelope is constant. The permeability of the material of the envelope can be ascertained by a discrete testing unit, and the results of such test are processed with the results of monitoring of the diameter by a computer which transmits signals serving to adjust the machine, to actuate an alarm or to arrest the machine.

    • Apparatus for testing the contents of successive cells in a chain which transports arrays of cigarettes in or to a packing machine has a support for reciprocable sensing pins, each of which is caused to engage a discrete cigarette when the support is moved toward a cell. The pins are shifted relative to the support as the latter continues to move toward the array whereby the shanks, heads or collars of the pins at least partially seal openings which connect a pneumatic monitoring unit with the atmosphere. If all of the openings are properly sealed or nearly sealed, the array of cigarettes which are engaged by the pins contains a requisite number of articles and all of the cigarettes have satisfactory tobacco-containing ends. If at least one of the cigarettes is missing or has a soft tobacco filler or is empty at that end which is engaged by the respective pin, the monitoring unit generates a signal which results in segregation of the tested array so that such array cannot be admitted into a pack or cannot be processed with packs containing satisfactory arrays. A second monitoring unit determines whether or not all of the pins return to their starting positions as soon as they become disengaged from the cigarettes of an array. The second unit communicates with the atmosphere by way of apertures which are provided in the support for the pins and whose effective cross-sectional areas are reduced by the respective pins when the pins allow the effective cross-sectional areas of the corresponding openings to increase, or vice versa.

    • The permeability of portions of or entire wrappers of successive filter cigarettes is tested with a gaseous fluid independently of the permeability of perforated portions of wrappers around the filter mouthpieces. Signals denoting the permeability of major portions of or entire wrappers are compared with a reference signal denoting the maximum permissible permeability, and the cigarettes having wrappers of excessive permeability are segregated from satisfactory cigarettes. Signals denoting the permeability of perforated wrapper portions are made visible to attendants or cause the generation or audible signals, for example, to facilitate proper adjustment of perforating instrumentalities if the permeability of perforated wrapper portions is too low. Alternatively, signals which denote the permeability of perforated wrapper portions are compared with a reference signal denoting the minimum acceptable or excessive permeability, and the cigarettes wherein the permeability of perforated wrapper portions is too low or excessive are segregated from other cigarettes. The cigarettes are moved sideways in the course of measurement of the permeability of their wrappers, and the permeability of major portions of or entire wrappers can be ascertained simultaneously with, prior or subsequent to measurement of permeability of perforated wrapper portions. The perforations are provided for the purpose of admitting atmospheric air into the column of tobacco smoke.

    • Cigarettes are tested with air streams which are caused to pass lengthwise through the fillers while the cigarettes move sideways past a testing station. One or two stationary chambers for air at subatmospheric or superatmospheric pressure are mounted at the testing station so that the ends of cigarettes which are being tested extend into the chamber or chambers. The air pressure in the chamber or chambers equals or approximates the pressure of air streams at the respective ends of the wrappers of cigarettes so that air in the chamber or chambers prevents the streams from communicating with the atmosphere during testing. The streams are monitored for changes in pressure. Such changes are indicative of defects of cigarettes and signals which are produced during monitoring are used to segregate defective cigarettes from satisfactory cigarettes.
