    • A peripheral card having a Personal Computer (“PC”) card form factor and removably coupled externally to a host system is further partitioned into a mother card portion and a daughter card portion. The daughter card is removably coupled to the mother card. In the preferred embodiment, a low cost flash “floppy” is accomplished with the daughter card containing only flash EEPROM chips and being controlled by a memory controller residing on the mother card. Other aspects of the invention includes a comprehensive controller on the mother card able to control a predefined set of peripherals on daughter cards connectable to the mother card; relocation of some host resident hardware to the mother card to allow for a minimal host system; a mother card that can accommodate multiple daughter cards; daughter cards that also operates directly with hosts having embedded controllers; daughter cards carrying encoded data and information for decoding it; and daughter cards with security features.

    • A method and system are described for distributing at least one clock signal between shelves in a multi-shelf modular computing system includes a clock signal generator for generating a first clock signal, an inter-shelf bus for carrying the first clock signal to a second shelf, and a first shelf manager module, associated with the second shelf, for receiving and regenerating the first clock signal and providing the regenerated first clock signal to at least one module within the second shelf. A system and method for detecting a location of a fault in an inter-shelf bus in a multi-shelf modular computing system is also disclosed. A power source applies a bias between at least two conductors of the inter-shelf bus. At least one module detects the applied bias to determine if a fault is located between the at least one shelf and the power source.

    • A system and method for configuring a software defined radio is disclosed. In an embodiment, a smart card and smart card reader are used to access layered information pre-programmed into a software defined radio. The smartcard reader extracts configuration information from the smart card and the configuration information is used to configure the software defined radio. The configuration may include, communication protocols, modulation/demodulation techniques, digital processing protocols, coding/decoding techniques, security authorization; operational protocols, and other information. Individual users may be given different levels of access depending on, among other things, the user's service requirements, mission requirements, security clearance, and/or authorization level. The disclosed systems and methods significantly reduce the amount of time and training required for personnel to establish communications using a software defined radio.

    • Methods and systems for distributing messages of a ring-topology-based link level communications protocol over a star-topology using a star-topology-based link level communications protocol are disclosed. According to one method, when a packet of the ring-topology-based link level communications protocol is received, it is determined whether the packet is to be sent to a number of destinations and returned to a sender. If the packet is intended for distribution to a number of destinations and return to the sender, the packet is encapsulated in a frame of the star-topology-based link level communications protocol, the destination address in the frame is set to a next destination address in a virtual ring topology, the frame is forwarded to a switch. The switch forwards the packet to the next destination in the virtual ring based on the input port and the destination address of the star-topology-based link level communications protocol. The process continues until the packet reaches the last destination in the virtual ring where the packet is encapsulated in a frame of the star-topology-based link level communications protocol and returned to the sender.
