    • A separating and feeding machine is disclosed for removing a succession of bound booklets or the like from a supply hopper adapted to hold a stack of the booklets for feeding them to a subsequent apparatus for further processing. The separating and feeding machine includes a reciprocating vacuum feed plate disposed in the bottom of the hopper for advancing the bottom booklet through a discharge opening to a take away feed mechanism, and includes first and second stage separating mechanism which initially maintains at least the bottom two booklets in the hopper in shingled relationship to expose a marginal portion thereof adjacent the bound edge so that a pressing member can maintain a normal force on the exposed marginal portion of the bottom booklet to prevent it from wrinkling and becoming jammed in the discharge opening while the vacuum feed plate is moving it toward the discharge opening. The second stage separating separater further ensures that only one booklet at a time can pass through the discharge opening.

    • A method and apparatus for keeping a matched document inserter system in synchronization. The method and apparatus are directed to controlling the inserter system which includes an input section for producing a sequence of collations, a transport for feeding the sequence of collations in a path of travel and a chassis section downstream from the input section capable of combining each collation in the sequence of collations with a respective corresponding specific enclosure. The method comprises the step(s) of: (a) recognizing when a collation in the sequence of collations has been removed from the inserter system, and (b) after the removed collation has been eliminated from the sequence of collations, maintaining proper spacing in the sequence of collations so that each collation in the sequence of collations is correctly assembled to the respective corresponding specific enclosure.

    • An improvement for an apparatus conveying sheets of paper seriatim along a deck between a plurality of roller pairs, including lower driven rollers and corresponding upper biased idler rollers. The improvement comprises a roller and guide plate assembly pivotably mounted on the deck. The roller and guide plate assembly includes a guide plate operatively coupled to rigid support shafts and upper roller assemblies of the roller pairs, and means for supporting the guide plate a fixed distance above the deck. The guide plate is mounted to at least two shaft support blocks, the rigid support shafts for the upper roller assemblies being mounted to the support blocks above the guide plate, the guide plate including slots through which the biased upper rollers of the upper roller assemblies extend therethrough to cooperate with the corresponding lower driven rollers to convey sheets across the deck. One of the shaft support blocks is pivotably mounted to the deck whereby the roller and guide plate assembly is pivotable between a raised position and a lowered operating position. There is a locking mechanism, including a support bracket and means for locking the roller and guide plate assembly to the support bracket in the lowered operating position, the roller and guide plate assembly being supported by a lower leg of the support bracket when the roller and guide plate assembly is in a lowered operating position.
