摘要： Various compositions, methods, and devices are provided that use fluoresc ent nanoparticles, which can function as markers, indicators, and light sour ces. The fluorescent nanoparticles can be formed from a fluorophore core sur rounded by a biocompatible shell, such as a silica shell. In one embodiment, the fluorescent nanoparticles can be delivered to tissue to mark the tissue , enable identification and location of the tissue, and/or illuminate an are a surrounding the tissue. In another embodiment, the fluorescent nanoparticl es can be used on a device or implant to locate the device or implant in the body, indicate an orientation of the device or implant, and/or illuminate a n area surrounding the device or implant. The fluorescent nanoparticles can also be used to provide a therapeutic effect.

摘要： A medical apparatus and method useful for the efficacious thermal treatment of lumen such as varicose veins during laser surgery is provided. The method includes inserti ng an optical fiber into a lumen at a treatment site which has at least two treatment segments. The light-emitting section of the optical fiber is aligned with a first treatment segment withi n the treatment site. Energy is emitted into the lumen at the first treatment segment and a temperature of the lumen is measured at the first treatment segment. The energy delivered to the treatme nt segment can be adjusted in response to the temperature measurement. The light-emitting section is moved to at least a second treatment segment within the lumen and energy is emitted into the lumen at the second treatment segment. During treatment at the second treatment segment, the temperature of the lumen is measured at the second treatment segment. This method can also include storing a temperature target in the memory device; generating a temperature signal usi ng the temperature sensor; utilizing the temperature signal to determine the measured temperature; and comparing the measured temperature to the temperature target stored in the memory device. The light- emitting section is moved to the next treatment segment when the measured temperature is equal or greater than the temperature target.

An energy delivery device comprising a diffusing optical fiber with a light-emitting section and a memory device having data programmed therein is also provided. The optical fiber includes a temperatur e sensor for measuring a temperature at a treatment site. An energy generator is connecte d to the optical fiber and to a positioning device. The optical fiber engages positioning device so that the positioning device can moveably position the light-emitting section of the optical fiber. Consequently, the optical fiber can be inserted directly into an appropriate position within a varicose portion of a vein or other lumen for thermal treatment of the vein. The memory device and a main processor are used to automatically control the operation of the medical apparatus including the intensity of energy emitted and the movement or position of th e light-emitting section of the optical fiber within the vein being treated.

The light-emitting section is moved to the next treatment segment when the measured temperature is equal or greater than the temperature target.

摘要： A system and method of sensing temperature at an optical fiber tip, includi ng the steps of positioning a slug of fluorescent material adjacent the optical fiber tip, providing an optical stimulus having a wavelength within a first predetermin ed range through at least one fiber optically linked to the optical fiber tip, wherei n a desired optical fluorescent response having a wavelength within a second predetermin ed range from the fluorescent slug is generated, detecting a signal representative of the optical stimulus, detecting a signal representative of the optical fluoresce nt response, digitally processing the optical stimulus signal and the optical fluorescent response signal to determine a phase difference therebetween, and calculating a temperature for the optical fiber tip as a function of the phase difference. The phase difference between the optical stimulus signal and the optical fluorescent response signal may be determined directly or indirectly as a function of the phase difference between a reference signal and the optical stimulus signal and the phase difference between the reference signal and the optical fluorescent response signal.
